One thing I've noticed in conversations with people I know who use AI regularly is that they're aware of its deleterious effects on cognition, but think the amount they use it, however much that is, is fine.

if you are ignoring a minority saying they desperately need your solidarity because “the government says you don’t have to anymore,” it is unlikely that you’re on the right side of the issue.

If you believe this, and I hope you do, there is nothing stopping you from continuing to protect your vulnerable neighbors by wearing masks in crowded and indoor spaces, especially necessary spaces like healthcare facilities, grocery stores, and public transportation. Absolutely nothing.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

What I hate about COVID downplayers is… you won okay. In the aftermath of humanity coming together to develop the most crucial vaccines of our lifetime & collectively sacrificing to save lives, we are now less safe, less vaccinated & less empathetic than ever. You won ok. Lay down your swords.

As we recall the trauma caused by COVID in 2020, we should not forget COVID continues to harm. Many still suffer from Long COVID, people who mask are often harassed, and we haven’t scaled clean air infrastructure. If we truly acknowledge past harms, we should be working to create a better future.

Haven't read the review, haven't seen the movie (don't like movies in general), but I read the translation when it first came out, and as someone who has read ~8 different translations Wilson's is and remains my recommendation for anyone reading the Odyssey for the first time.

What public health needs to be telling us: AQI (air quality index) rn is based on PM 2.5 (fine particulate matter less than 2.5 microns). There is NO safe level of exposure to PM 2.5. Particulate toxins enter the bloodstream, cross internal barriers and membranes to your brain and other organs. BAD.

public health must be public. People do not make good health decisions on their own in crises. But most will follow directions and use tools that are given to them and explained (more than once) clearly and accurately.

i cannot implore you enough to use respiratory protection that *really works* for what you’re facing. yes, the best mask is the mask you’ll wear, but when conditions are this bad, know that not all tools are created equal. if you can access something better and are able to wear it, it’s worth it.

4.9 - The Masks Explained
Underneath the title it says:
Below is a visual side-by-side comparison of each mask.
Efficacy is always dependent on a good fit and seal.
The results of the chart are as follows:
KN95: filters 95% of particulate matter, filters exhalation, easier to breathe in.
N95: filters 95% of particulate matter, filters exhalation, easier to breathe in.
Disposable P100: N95: filters 99.97% of particulate matter.
Reusable P100s with 60926 filters: filters 99.97% of particulate matter, filters gases and vapors.
Reusable P100s with 60926 filters and 604 exhalation filters: filters 99.97% of particulate matter, filters gases and vapors, filters exhalation.

I feel like there should maybe be more coverage of the fact that NOAA is forecasting the AQI in Cleveland will be 296 tomorrow and 365 on Friday. That's worse than June 2023.

Weather isn't climate but what *is* climate is that it was never this damn awful outside so damn often even 20 years ago. When the weather app can't decide between a heat warning and a smoke warning, you know you're living in a dystopian hellscape.
