I've been a fan of Bennett ever since FOUNDRYSIDE, and have very much enjoyed the Ana & Din books so far. For people who like 'speculative fiction' as the old Change of Hobbit bookstore used to call it.

I would like to propose the Taco Bell Principle When a person/institution Did A Problem, & IMMEDIATELY fesses up & takes proactive steps to solve it That's exactly what we want them to do? So how bout we let them live ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
A quick word on Taco Bell: That's where we found the suspected lettuce, and it's not bc Taco Bell is gross. It's bc Taco Bell is REALLY GOOD at tracing product! Keeping track of exactly where they got their ingredients, & exactly what restaurants each shipment of ingredients went to!

Personally, I think that sometimes historians overestimate how long it took to make some ancient objects. This on the other hand would’ve taken ages, justifying the no doubt exorbitant cost.
completely agree, the infinite flexibility of phrasal verbs is the greatest thing about this language
People kinda dismiss English as kinda being “whatever” on the prettiness scale but for me this is what makes English so beautiful
Sadly, a disheartening percentage of parents see high school athletics as a ticket to college admittance and scholarships. The deep brokenness of higher education in this country has many externalities and this is one of them.
there literally are no good-faith concerns about trans girls participating in high school sports. it is children playing games with their friends, its about confidence and relationship-building. let kids play with their friends.

“What we need to explain to the world: Number one, we are close to creating a genie that can grant any wish. Number two, we are going to make sure that our first wishes broadly benefit humanity” - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI — This is definitely the opposite of Anthropic’s AI kills all jobs pitch.
Over 20 years ago, I attended a community event in Berkeley about placing RFIDs in library books to make it easier to manage them (check out, check back in, etc.) and any time "RFID" was said, a woman would shout, "SATELLITE TRACKING!"
And very characteristically of Berkeley City Council, we're ending with a comment on how cell towers are a threat to public safety

Trump shattered ethics norms. Will voters trust Democrats to fix them?
Democrats are making the case that now is the time to tackle anti-corruption reforms — to serve as a check on Donald Trump and to overhaul a system voters say is co-opted against their interests.

Apple is also the best suited for “small AI”, device-bound and truly personal, a far more sustainable approach to these technologies.
I can't tell you how correct Ed Zitron is about Apple being well positioned to eat. The more chaotic and agentic and scammy it gets out there, the better their gated community looks. Every other tech company capexing their way to the center of the earth, sunk in debt. Apple on a mountain of cash.
@stevejones20.bsky.social did an edit of Miles for a film study technique session of Sports Business Classroom a week or so ago that had me and another instructor falling out of our chairs like the two dudes at the end of the Hawks bench in that one Larry Bird Game

I’m torn about Chinese EVs, not for protectionist reasons, but because I think they’d be hella popular, and while I hate combustion engines, I hate car-centricity even more.
Biden effectively banned Chinese EVs and now Trump is banning Chinese humanoid robots. Teslas secret weapon has turned out to be the U.S. government banning their competitors. A ban on Chinese open weight AI models feels inevitable in this climate.

I'm a huge Emily Wilson fan She taught me ancient Greek. I've assigned her translations to my students. I interviewed her about translating the Odyssey a few weeks ago for my YouTube I'm not a fan of this review. And for what, I think, are good reasons (SPOILERS) /1
I wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Interesting trend: CTO/ Head of Eng / VPE folks at startups and mid-sized companies are... leaving / burning out. Hiring for these roles is HARD, but even after filling the role, they will often leave a few months later and take a career break And they have v good reasons
10,000 fewer on-street car parking spaces. That's the pledge from Amsterdam's new coalition government over the next four years. While many cities still argue whether change is possible, Amsterdam is reclaiming its public realm one tree, bench, bike rack, terrace, playground, and garden at a time.
