Science is the textbook example of an enterprise that *must* get the majority of its funding from the public. Very little profit motive should be involved because when you are studying something there is no telling where that shit would lead. It may not have a economic value for decades.

2 thoughts: 1. Something has already "gone seriously wrong" and they're trying to get ahead of it. 2. They're blazing through money and masking the slowdown as giving af about humanity rather than PR to spin the fact that they were all racing to insolvency. Or both.
