'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)

An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

Not a big fan of the "sick, elderly and/or disabled people don't count" discourse that appears to follow public health disasters these days.

My friend the climatologist worries that the heat is rising. My friend the epidemiologist worries that cases are rising. My friend the historian worries that fascism is rising. My friend the activist worries that we are not rising.

What will it take before medical experts start collaborating with aerosol experts in designing their research? Is it conceivable that air cleaners work well in preventing disease spread in pig farms but not in nursing homes?

Seems inevitable H5N1 will reach every corner of the globe. Only question is how long until some kind of reassortment or set of mutations makes it adaptable to infect and transmit between humans. Feels like waiting for a single radioactive atom to decay. Only question is: What's its half-life?

As we recall the trauma caused by COVID in 2020, we should not forget COVID continues to harm. Many still suffer from Long COVID, people who mask are often harassed, and we haven’t scaled clean air infrastructure. If we truly acknowledge past harms, we should be working to create a better future.

Since we're talking COVID: Masks work, ivermectin does not. Vaccines massively protect you and help against long-term stuff, but you need to keep up with boosters. You need to keep masking; COVID isn't over because WE DIDN'T STOP THE TRANSMISSIONS in 2020-2021. Also many are still at high risk

Hey all- I'll be doing my first semi-regular livestream this Saturday at 11 am LA, 2 pm NYC, 8 pm Berlin time on YouTube! This is gonna be a casual educational hangout on the topic of.... ignorance! Hurrah!

A flier for a Livestream. There is a green background with the words 'livestream' in a funky font at the top. Lola Germs, a young white woman with dark hair, is sitting down, holding a a large book in front of her. She is looking judgmentally over her glasses at the viewer. The book has the cover of "Agnotology" by Richard Proctor superimposed on top of it, but below the Agnotology cover, the text "Hieronymus Bosch" is visible. The bottom of the flyer says "IGNORANCE".

If everybody did this, even places where people can't mask effectively (restaurants, bars, etc.) would get safer for everyone because transmission would be lower overall. Audiences mask = performers are safer. Students mask = teachers are safer. We have fuckin' got to learn to help each other out.

Your 'doom quote' for today: "I don't think we're yet evolved to the point where we're clever enough to handle as complex a situation as climate change. The inertia of humans is so huge that you can't really do anything meaningful." www.theguardian.com/science/2010...

James Lovelock: Humans are too stupid to prevent climate change

In his first in-depth interview since the theft of UEA emails, the scientist blames inertia and democracy for lack of action

I am once again begging Hollywood to stop using the Greek alphabet for an Ancient World movie, if they can't afford to even throw a couple of quid at anyone with an inkling of the language. Unless they really think audiences are dying to see THS THDPSSSSPS

"Our analysis yielded an estimate of 9100 (95% CI: [7300; 10 700]) heat-related deaths in Germany for the summer of 2022, whereas ... the RKI estimated the number of heat-related deaths at 4500 [2100; 7000]."

Heat-Related Mortality in the Extreme Summer of 2022 (09.02.2024)

The increasing number of episodes of extreme heat represents one of the most significant health risks posed by climate change worldwide and in Germany (1, 2). The association between high outdoor temp...

“Separate yourself from your profession. That’s what I do, that’s not what I am” – he was talking about acting, but it’s absolutely the same in any freelance job. This idea of being on 24/7 is exceedingly unhealthy.

Many infections result in lasting consequences, not just Covid. We believe public health shouldn't be guided by a "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" mindset, but by reducing preventable infections. It would mean less acute illness, less chronic disease, and a healthier society overall.
