Je Suis Marxiste, Tendance Harpo (...movie star, movie star...) Mostly Harmless. Panicking optional. Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos. Ex-Douglas Bader Meinhof Gang. Yasser (Arafat), I can boogie all night long. Views pilfered from everyone else's

Acnestis [ak-NEES-tis] (n.) - The part of the back that cannot easily be reached to scratch. Used in a sentence: “Ever since our illicit dalliance in the back garden, my acnestis has been afflicted with a most infernal rash of Poison Oak, and Miss Drollup has ceased returning my correspondence.”

A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme for “Acnestis,” defined as the part of the back between the shoulder blades that cannot easily be reached to scratch. The example sentence jokes about an illicit garden dalliance, a poison oak rash, and Miss Drollup ceasing correspondence. At right, an antique illustration shows two draped figures with dotted reference lines marking areas of the back.

At the risk of asking to be publicly mocked by Chaminda, I do think that the divergence between affordable Waterstones books and extremely expensive university press books doesn’t help. Many famous academic texts of the 40s to 70s were quite dry but also affordable. Eg..👇

There are vast numbers of academics, researchers etc whose only route to being a "public intellectual" is some mix of posting enough on social media to become a columnist or talking head, and/or writing one of those Waterstones books that explain some aspect of the world in one sellable theory

there's a lot going on right now, but the ability to buy elections in order to stay out of prison is on the ballot whether you realize it or not

This came up on my Facebook memories and reminded me how fascinated i am by people who share this meme and don’t stop to think “hang on, how can these radically different dystopias overlap and how are we at the centre of all of them?”

Last night, Indonesia downed Thailand in the soccer and the joy of winning is very real but Prabowo has been relentlessly cyberbullied today for just being generally odd during the broadcast and that's the real win

I’ve just encountered my first Charles III coin in change - which shows how things have changed. Really pretty, though. (I also got a Great Fire of London £2, which I didn’t even know had been struck!)

A one pound coin, which shows two honey bees, and a two pound coin with a dramatic design showing the City of London burning and (with stylised swirls of smoke) and the inscription “1666 the great fire of London 2016.”

There are so many people, so many, that love film and want to dedicate their whole lives to making films, in front of the camera, behind it, in editing suites and casting rooms and makeup trailers. And that these locusts can come in and just devour the industry, take it from us all, is devastating.

I am absolutely a broken record on this but it is notable how much more coverage the French students (and good on them!) are getting in Australian media vs when Indonesian students get into it (and good on them!)
