The parallel between this paper and England et al. 2014 (doi.org/10.1038/ncli...) is a good reminder that part of the Pacific SST trend pattern discussion is similar to that which occurred during the “global-warming hiatus”. However, while the hiatus global warming trends have been reconciled...

Recent intensification of wind-driven circulation in the Pacific and the ongoing warming hiatus - Nature Climate Change

The slowdown in global average surface warming has recently been linked to sea surface cooling in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This work shows that strengthening trade winds caused a reduction in the 20...

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.

Spaghetti chart showing Oxford Radcliffe Observatory daily maximum temperatures for every day of the year from 1815 to 2026. 211 years of historical data are shown as very faint grey lines tracing a seasonal cycle from around 5°C in winter to a summer peak of roughly 25–30°C in July and August. A blue smoothed 30-day mean line highlights the average annual temperature cycle. The 2026 line is shown in bold red, running from January through to late May before spiking sharply upward to reach 33.7°C on 26 May, well above the entire historical grey envelope for that time of year. A single dashed red reference line marks the previous May record of 30.6°C set on 29 May 1944. The 2026 reading exceeds this by 3.1°C and, in statistical terms, is the 6th most anomalous maximum temperature in Oxford's 211-year record, ranking as the most anomalous May maximum ever observed and coming within 0.6°C of the all-time June record of 34.3°C set in 1976.

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership. Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources. Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet. Unbelievable.

Trump moves to dismantle major US climate research center in Colorado

The Trump administration is breaking up the National Center for Atmospheric Research, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

Friends at NCAR, we're with you. @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is a trailblazer in community modelling driven not by idealogy, but by open science. We share all our code, thoughts, ideas. These can't be shut down. We'll fight and find every mechanism to support the ongoing CESM community.

Online chatter suggests that the DOE Climate Change (Denying) Working Group has been disbanded and the report will be withdrawn. 😂 Seems that violating FACA and the Information Quality Acts have consequences. Not seen any official announcement though.

This is a bit technical, but I'm updating my table of TCR/ECS values for CMIP6 models, and I need to find info on these models: "AWI-ESM-1-1-LR", "CAS-ESM2-0", "CMCC-CM2-HR4", "E3SM-1-1", "E3SM-1-1-ECA", "EC-Earth3-Veg-LR" , "ICON-ESM-LR". Anyone? thx!

For years, I've long said that climate.gov's team of remarkable communicators (& their amazing blogs, which were accessible but did not "dumb down" the science!) was NOAA's best (& most cost effective!) public-facing extreme #weather / #climate education effort to date. This will be a huge loss.

Climate.gov, a major US government website supporting public education on climate science, will likely shut down after almost all of its staff were fired. What would be worse is if the website were co-opted to publish climate denial content.

The village of Blatten in Switzerland is partly buried by the collapse of a glacier which melted because our greenhouse gas emissions warmed the climate. Another reminder that choosing to not invest enough today to reduce emissions means far greater costs for society in the long term.

I’m looking forward to EGU next week, where there will be a large representation from the ETH Climate Dynamics group! A 🧵 of all the exciting research our group will be sharing. I’m also looking forward to catching up with everyone going to EGU! (1/11)

We published a signal-to-noise analysis of AMOC observations in GRL. TLDR: Direct observations (RAPID) of the AMOC do show a decline in line with climate model projected weakening (~1 Sv/decade) but the noise is still very large in comparison to the signal. Paper: doi.org/10.1029/2025...
