The constant load part is a big deal - they compete for power when the wind isn't blowing, they compete for power during peak usage. They are not a good fit for a renewable-centric grid.

Thinking about how Wayne Brown would get leverage on Labour if he were somehow made leader of the Greens — he'd do something like offer them Coalition that delivered large parts of the platform or confidence & supply & three years of bloody noses from packing the biscuit tin with Greens/Nats bills

One of my first "Aha!" insights about the NZ economy after I arrived in 1993 was the weakness of the regulatory system which was built on the astonishingly naive belief that markets would solve any pricing issues. It's a total institutional and political failure to have not tackled this issue
