No can donations at #heritagefestyeg this year, but we can still donate in cash. And we know the food bank still needs a lot of help so try to remember to bring a little extra cash to #hawrelakpark this weekend.
The new park renovations, combined with new parking rules, mean the Food Bank is not able/allowed to bring its big trucks into the park - so they have no way to collect cans & boxes and bring them back to their warehouse. But they will have volunteers on site collecting monetary donations. #yeg
The thing about AI bros that I find so unsettling is that you only really have to connect with one great piece of art - stand breathless in front of a painting, lock eyes with a singer in a concert, sob at the end of a film - to understand the value of the humanity of it. And they just…never have?
Attacks on libraries, library staff, collections and patrons are ramping up around the world. Anti library campaigners appear to be sharing their playbooks and only need to be lucky once while library campaigners need to be lucky every single time.📚📜
FWIW: As a bookseller in a relatively small (though admittedly quite well-read) city in Canada, I can say with some confidence that @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social needed no help to sell her translations of The Odyssey and The Iliad. They've been steady sellers from the get-go. #odysssey
Riding bikes is 10X more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities. And that’s just the climate emissions. Doesn’t include the massive public & personal cost difference, the air & noise pollution difference, the massive space difference, etc, etc…Via @theconversation.bsky.social
Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
Active travel can help tackle the climate crisis earlier than electric vehicles – even if you swap the car for a bike for just one trip a day.

"This is more than just a niche issue for astronomers. This is an issue that's going to affect the quality of life for everybody on Earth." https://www.space.com/space-exploration/satellites/private-companies-could-ruin-the-night-sky-for-the-entire-world-and-international-law-cant-stop-them
Private companies could ruin the night sky for the entire world, and international law can't stop them
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) can single-handedly approve space projects that will change the night sky around the world. The international community can do very little against it.

We need your 🫵 help speaking up for safe streets and municipal autonomy! 1. Add your voice to our postcard campaign 🌅 2. Send the Minister and your local representatives an email using the provided template ✉️ This simple action helps keep our communities safe 💪 #yegbike
This scares the absolute living shit out of me, and it should be the same for everyone else with even half a brain.
I've never seen anything like it. Salta, Argentina, has just recorded its hottest night on record during the climatologically coldest time of the year. The minimum overnight temperature did not fall below 26°C (78.8°F), pulverizing the previous monthly record by 7°C.
I filled this out in defence of Edmonton's bike lane program, and I encourage you to do the same. pathsforpeople.org/initiatives/...

#yeg folks (and I'd guess this applies to many others too) please go to your farmer's market and support your local small farmers. Buy what they have, show them you care. They are struggling with these rains and it looks like some may lose their farms. #buylocal #smallfarms #farmersmarket
“Cornell researchers found that at the current rate of AI growth, the burgeoning industry could represent 24 to 44 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, the equivalent of adding five to ten million cars to US roadways.”
The Pollution Being Churned Out by AI Data Centers Is So Severe That It's Almost Incomprehensible
The extent of the pollution being put out by thousands of data centers is shocking. Some developers are exploiting regulatory loopholes.

This is a hell of a piece of writing from an essay by German Philosopher Jurgen Habermas,
Patruck Dewitt is a treasure and this book a must-read. Bob Comet is a delight to get to know, with his quiet life and his knack for attracting lively friends. This book gently revealed many wise notions, in between making me laugh out loud. #booksky #librarianist #patrickdewitt
Meanwhile, back in South Africa, my mother has befriended a pair of storks and has taken to giving them snacks of cheese and shaved ham. I'm not sure this is a good diet for storks, but my mum is enjoying her new pals so I'm leaving her to it. #woolystork #family #goodgrief
And so it begins... everyone who is about to be offered a job should ask for DOUBLE, then join a union. 🙂

Feeling the love for Bafana Bafana today. An excellent game from both teams and a deserved win for Canada.🇿🇦🇨🇦 #fifaworldcup #bafanabafana
Kind of scary that this guy clearly wants to be president, and seems to think he has a chance.
Despite some mainstream outlets making it seem like Carlson is moderating his politics, he isn’t interested in bringing Republicans to the light. His goal is to push them deeper into the darkness.
Never a bad day to quietly participate in a subtle work of achieving socialist utopia via careful attention to the craft of producing useful beauty in the world
Early morning joy in South Africa! Now it’s us and Canada on Sunday!
Reminder: perhaps the easiest & cheapest way to tell Bezos to fuck off is by linking to Bookshop or (even better) an indie bookstore WHENEVER you talk about a book online. W/o a link people will just google it & that will lead to Amazon. W a link you can send a sale to a good business
Last day of circus fest was a wet one. Outdoor performance on #happybeerstreetyeg had us all cheering and laughing and soaked through. After celebratory beer and pizza, we're home to a sump pump that's given up on this bullshit... #yeg #climatedisaster
This weekend I am volunteering at the Alberta Circus Festival and it's been a blast so far. My hot #parentingtip of the week is to let your kids run away (for the weekend) and join the circus. They'll learn to juggle, stiltwalk, clown, soar, laugh, wonder and love. #yeg #circusarts
Imagine being such a loser that the only way you can be anything interesting is to be the "richest man who ever lived"? Like, okay my guy, but do you have any thoughts on joy, or slime mold, or the awesome new book by @chanda.blacksky.app , or is it all just a mess of "me, me, me" in your head?
Elon Musk is the richest person who ever lived. He’s also the most hugely over-valued and over-rated person who ever lived.
