Last day to submit comments!
Do you appreciate @nws.noaa.gov's posts on Bluesky? Did you know that this account is a pilot program that may or may not be continued and even expanded to NWS field offices? NWS is soliciting comments here! www.surveymonkey.com/r/PrototypeN... Press release: www.weather.gov/media/notifi...
@nws.noaa.gov Director Ken Graham presented on NOAA’s modeling grand challenge at #AMS2026 this morning. He announced that the NWS is moving to MPAS as its modeling dynamical core, with his #1 moonshot goal being a global, fully coupled 3-km Earth prediction system using MPAS.
The National Weather Service will host an onsite hiring event at the upcoming AMS Student Conference in Houston
With the mental gymnastics to not overturn that Rams touchdown… send those refs to the Olympics… #LionsVsEverybody
Today’s xkcd made me cry. In a good way. xkcd.com/3172/
A horrific accident early Saturday morning left a car in the side of an NWS office and the office relying on the NWS service backup system. Service backup is important in situations like this - but also is being increasingly used due to NWS staffing and infrastructure issues. tinyurl.com/4txuyhbz
Tragic vehicle accident takes an NWS office offline
Looking at how the NWS offices back each other up. Severe weather and flash flooding in the south central US next couple of days.

It’s aurora time people. Get those cameras out
Day 40 of the shutdown, that’s 2 missed paychecks and part of a third. Federal employees (including my colleagues at the National Weather Service) continue working without knowing when they’ll be paid, or are furloughed. If you know someone affected, please check in on them. #GovernmentShutdown2025
The Tigers have managed to age me by 5 years over the course of this series.
The CSSL/NTP assisted the US National Weather Service (NWS) with their upgrading of the official rating of the June 2025 Enderlin, ND tornado from EF3 to EF5. Announced by the NWS today, it’s the first EF5-rated tornado in the US since 2013. Details here: uwo.ca/ntp/blog/202... Image B. Emfinger
Spoden: Our training trains us for everything, except how to live with a mistake. How do you handle that?
No better way to spend Labor Day than in the UP of Michigan :)
And before unknowing people jump to the conclusion that this was an adversarial relationship, it was quite the opposite. NWS management and the union together made the agency stronger resulting in improved services.
INBOX: National Weather Service employees organization files federal lawsuit against President Donald Trump's executive order to ban some federal unions.
Why do we care about continued investment in our weather radar infrastructure? Without a reliable, modernized radar network, we lose valuable time in seeing tornadoes *before* they threaten places and people. The below percentages indicate that radar prompts 9 out of 10 warnings!
Computed statistic for yearly percentage of NWS Tornado Warnings that are "RADAR Indicated" at warning issuance. 2017 92.4% 2018 92.0% 2019 90.6% 2020 92.1% 2021 88.8% 2022 92.1% 2023 88.5% 2024 91.0% 2025 90.7%
Excited to see @wxkylegillett.bsky.social paper on Sounderpy officially published! Sounderpy has been revolutionary in getting and visualizing sounding data! [
Reminder that the Tsunami Warning Centers are part of the National Weather Service. It would be nice to have them fully funded.
This is a VERY large earthquake, possibly/probably among the 10 largest ever recorded. A clear subduction zone megathrust event. And it is another M>8.5 event with a notable foreshock (the recent M7.4 in same location), like Tohoku in 2011.
