My mum has mellowed a little as she’s aged but she’s still prim and proper. When I was a teen we didn’t get along & after an argument I rang the vet & changed our cat’s name to Ploppy. When she was there they called out “Mrs Blackwell & Ploppy please”, she was horrified, I made myself scarce 🤣

It's gotten so much easier to start learning so many more languages, you used to be limited to the 3-5 major languages that a local bookstore or educational institution had decided it was worth making available, and now you can just like, look things up in hundreds of them

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

Watching Commonwealth games closing ceremony on BBC Alba. People talking over it in Gaelic is no more or no less annoying than in English.

If I have absolutely no preference whatsoever for how much melanin the doctor or nurse treating me has or where they’re from does that mean I can skip the nhs waiting list queue? I am actually waiting for a minor procedure so this would be handy…

news.sky.com/story/nhs-st... stereotypically this has been seen as Old People, but not only would the old people of now have often been born post-Windrush, lot of this will be younger people who've always lived in a diverse Britain. The guy with a pregnant wife likely millennial at oldest

I do think that tolerance for swearing is quite individual? Because I like to read books aloud to my children I am very aware of the swear levels of books One thing I find hard to read is pseudo swears—I am with Dorothy Parker 3/3

Quote from Dorothy Parker:
So, you're the man who can't spell
'fuck."
Dorothy Parker to Norman Mailer after publishers had convinced Mailer to replace the word with a euphemism,
'fug,' in his 1948 book, "The Naked and the Dead.

Type the word Theseus in a text editor, then replace each letter in turn with a new copy of that letter. The new Theseus is indistinguishable from the old. I offered this as an insight in a philosophy exam at uni, and got very high marks. It was a complete pisstake.

At a job interview and I got asked that if I was an animal, what would I be and why. I decided I didn't want the job by then, so I said I would be a cat, because it would be fun to lick my own arse. Surprisingly, they offered me the job because they liked my sense of humour.

An analysis of 3,500 couches featured in IKEA catalogues from 1960 to 2021 shows that European interiors became noticeably greyer in the 2010s. Design trends of course don't last forever. IKEA is now bringing long-forgotten colours and patterns back from the archives.

100 years ago, my maternal grandfather worked in the post office. He worked his way up to be a respectable postmaster. 100 years ago, my paternal grandfather was a child, but his father also worked for the post office and had been imprisoned for intercepting confidential communications.

Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?

Instagram has just suggested I follow someone who died almost a decade ago. It must know I like people who don't post too much.

brown pants in whitehall, as a part of government that really, really shouldn't do this sort of thing emails me with a meaningless announcement about their supplier portal, copying in clear the email addresses of every single one of their suppliers

It says something about the UK that the lunchtime news needed to give context that the wildfires in Valencia province were 100 miles from Benidorm. I don't think they mentioned how far away they were from the city of Valencia!
