~Just an Old White Dude Trying to Make the World a Better Place~
Fun fact about yesterday’s election results: Democrats will be in power in states that have enough electoral votes to bring the National Popular Vote Compact into effect if those states sign on. We could, in theory, obviate the Electoral College before 2028.
Last night’s results restored my faith in Americans. Voters opted for competence, decency & a love of country Sadly, local voters in town remain infected by the cruelty, incompetence & chaos of MAGA. So the same dipshits who ran our city into a fuck’n ditch were re-elected. Good Luck HB idiots!
Republican’s Big “Beautiful” Bill timed their Medicaid and Medicare cuts to go into effect after the midterms in order to blame Dems. Maybe get ahead of that messaging now.
Real democracies elect their leaders by popular vote. We could do it too.
Need 48 more Electoral College votes for the National Vote Interstate Compact to come into effect. Dems/coalitions on track to win trifectas in seven states that haven't yet passed the NPVIC: AZ AK MI NV PA WI. That's 64 Electoral College votes.
Ensuring that people's rights are protected, now and forever, is not "getting even." Making the executive branch follow the law is not "retribution"
"The American people don't want us to get even; they want us to get things done on their behalf." House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is now poised to become the next House Speaker, says that Democrats will focus on affordability concerns and not retribution after their midterm wins.
The White House is a crime scene. Accountability is not retribution.

I remain but a small-town political scientist, & it’s still early in the evening, but it appears that The Actual Democrats did not Need To Do any of the Things or Learn any of the Big Lessons that Ezra Douthglesias said they Must Do & Learn. No Fascism, as it turns out, is the Actual Popularism.
Stacy Abrams redux re: organizing. Black women get shit done with or without support and it’s amazing how close Nixon got while being undermined by centrist idiots
Even if Angie Nixon loses a close race in Florida, the entire Democratic establishment has to look in the mirror and eat shit. She did with straight up organizing what the data geniuses assumed was impossible
Chuck Schumer should take the win and retire with grace. Pass the torch to a new generation of Americans (who didn't recruit Haley Stevens).
“Once again, it seems, Americans are coming together, ready to follow the pattern of the past and rebuild a government that works not just for the wealthy, but for everyone.” PLEASE VOTE! THE WORLD IS COUNTING ON AMERICANS TO SET AMERICA STRAIGHT! heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/november-2...

Tomorrow is Election Day.

Medgar Evers was killed in his driveway because he refused to accept a Mississippi where some were denied the right to vote. He stood with thousands who marched, organized and sacrificed so future generations could have a voice.
HEY HUNTINGTON BEACH!!! Rather than continuing to complain abt congestion, "the horror" of e-bikes & declining public safety, how abt investing in bike infrastructure? An investment in new bike infrastructure is an investment in our city. For once, try having a vision to support our future!
“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath Some costs are savings.
It would appear that Trump is pulling a Johnson (Andrew Johnson that is). Hopefully voters of 2026 are as disgusted & motivated as the voter of 1866 were. heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/october-31...

On his “Swing Around the Circle” in summer 1866 to drum up support for his party before that year’s midterms, President Andrew Johnson denounced Congress as an illegal body, called certain Republican ...

One of the lasting images that reflect Trump 2.0: fuck it up/cover it up. Luckily Trump & his losers can’t simply throw a tarp over >the disastrous Iran Wat >the cruelty of ICE & >the economy of incompetence Every GOP elected, appointee & voter is complicit & responsible #NeverForget
Turns out “reduce driving” is also the most effective way to improve a number of other policy outcomes.
"Reduce driving" is the simplest, most reliable way to reduce crash deaths, but NHTSA and national safety org's seldom mention it. New research: "Vehicle miles traveled was [states'] strongest predictor of overall and motor vehicle occupant fatality rates." papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
In podcast abt the Texas Senate race, part of the coverage was an interview w/ a Texas GOP women's group leader. She said she couldn't vote for James Talarico b/c "he is the wrong type of Christian." Instead, she'll vote for Ken Paxton Never assume the religious right ever acts in good faith.
This sums up "car brain" perfectly. The lengths Americans will go to rationalize private vehicle ownership defies reality & logic. Car culture traps tens of millions of Americans into an unaffordable cycle with limited or nonexistent alternatives.
“You can’t store personal property on the street,” said NYPD attorney Matt Russo. “A bike is personal property and a car is not.” buff.ly/pr3PxzU
Gerrymandering needs to be outlawed nationally. FULL STOP! Until that time, every American who values our democracy MUST vote to destroy those who support & otherwise further gerrymandering, voter suppression, & election conspiracy theories. Protect our freedoms! Protect the vote!
NEW from @stephenwolf.bsky.social: The redistricting wars Trump ignited last year haven't ended. After a brief lull, they'll heat up again soon. And Tuesday's elections will play a huge role in deciding who's actually in charge of any redraws. Stephen covers every last state in this new deep dive.
WSJ chronicles the Kushner-Witkoff discussions with Putin: (1) no peace for Ukraine, (2) sanctions lifted for Russia, (3) loads of lucrative deals for Kushner, Witkoff and their cronies, (4) no upside for the US. This is a sell-out, not a negotiation. www.wsj.com/world/russia...
Make Money Not War: Trump’s Real Plan for Peace in Ukraine
The Kremlin pitched the White House on peace through business. To Europe’s dismay, the president and his envoy are on board.

We are facing a crisis of impunity. That's why we built The Rule of Law Project — to investigate unlawful conduct by federal officials, and work with state and local prosecutors to hold them to account. Watch Mark Blumberg and Brad Adams launch this new initiative on MSNOW with Nicolle Wallace.

America’s white Christian Nationalists are political backers of our Republican serial rapist - in - chief. The DOJ is protecting pedophiles by continuing to conceal the Epstein Files. A Republican candidate is running ads featuring a pedophile’s wife. Abuser Max Miller is a Republican.
@larrytenney.bsky.social Hey Larry - I didn't know if you saw this article, but it made me think of you when he mentioned your old boss. I hope you are well!

HEY HUNTINGTON BCH, CA VOTERS! As we face rising prices, Epstein Class nonsense & corporate abuses, never forget our current city council: >gave away public funds to political allies >tried to pass on-bid contracts & >took away our ability to escape corporate utility rate hikes VOTE ACCORDINGLY!!!
