Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

AI-assisted text is deadly for academic journal editors and reviewers. I'm detecting a lot more of it recently as an editor. It's still there in the "Frankencitations" and those little linguistic "tells" like "AI is not the cause. It's the symptom of an underlying reality." But it's more, too. 1/

Very small n from a human-centered design program: 2 years ago, most of my (upper level undergrad) students seemed either unfamiliar or very positive about AI. This year, they were far more skeptical, worried about how AI was undermining their learning & taking the jobs they were preparing for.

An unaccounted for part of the economy is how much young people virulently hate AI, despite how aggressively it's being forced on them. Goldman Sachs reports that 300 million full-time jobs could be replaced by AI by 2030. Labor turnover is high and hiring has slowed. 71% of Americans worry that AI will cause permanent job loss. As young people about to enter the workforce for the first time, the fear of unemployment is understandable, but we cannot save ourselves with the very tool that is putting us at risk. The irony is that as Penn pours endless money and energy into AI advancement in its attempt to get ahead, the University is only quickening its own demise. AI cannot coexist with education — it can only degrade it. As technology advances and workers are replaced by machines, schools are some of the only places we have left to explore and wrestle with human thought. With our own university leading the charge, AI is now corrupting those few sacred spaces and leaving us with nowhere to engage in true scholarship. Editorials represent the majority view of members of The Daily Pennsylvanian Editorial Board who meet regularly to discuss issues relevant to the Penn community. This is a common reply to concerns about GenAI research as if it were just another computational tool that saves us times from tedious tasks and whose accuracy can be rigorously quantified. It is not. GenAI research poses at least 2 serious problems... /n

I keep coming back to Kevin Bryan's point: "I get the desire for artisanal, hand-crafted research, with the matrices hand-inverted. But our job is to move the frontier of knowledge, not self-actualization." I personally don't care if something is done by humans or AI, I want it to be accurate.
