I think everyone should see this incredible picture of Dolly Parton: it’s by Stacie Williams (asterosperma on Instagram) and it’s called The Queen of Appalachia

A stunning screenprint image in a style which is part folk art, part religious icon. Dolly Parton sits on a throne-like wooden chair, surrounded by garlands of flowers and leaves. Orange butterflies (I think they are monarchs?) hover around her head. Her hair is huge and golden, and she is wearing a long, sweeping orange gown, which is turned up over her knee to show off her brown knee length high heeled boots. Two black bear cubs play around her, one on the floor and one in her lap. Dolly stares calmly at the viewer. Her right hand is raised in benediction, and in her left she holds a ripe strawberry which she is feeding to one of the bear cubs.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

She also really debunks the common justifications about religion, region, and age. Your grandparents and parents have shitty values because they have shitty values, not because of anything else. They could do better. Anyone can use their eyes to see the world and have the correct read.

What Dolly taught us is that it is in fact possible to be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams of avarice but still be a fundamentally good person with a strong moral compass, and the only reason more rich people aren't like that is because they don't want to be.

If you are feeling like you want to DO something to honour Dolly and her exceptional life, you can donate to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Thanks to Dolly, tens of millions of children around the world received free books from birth until their 5th birthday. donate.imaginationlibrary.com

Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school; she built hospitals & bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.

“In Dallas for the premier of '9 to 5', I had an uncanny experience, and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened and said, "Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her." We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”

I think that Dolly Parton was, for a lot of people, an ambassador of the "good" values people think of about the South: kindness, hospitality, can-do spirit, sharp and witty and down to earth. I think for a segment of people, too, she was theantithesis of a lot of noxious masculine country stuff.

I think the universal grieving comes in no small part from the fact she represented the best of what America could be, and that she never stopped chasing that ideal, artistically and socially

Dolly Parton was a friend to science, literacy, and the queer community when not many else dared. If you’re looking for a way to remember her, consider donating to her Imagination Library, which has provided over 330 million books for children internationally. imaginationlibrary.com

Of all the things they could be working on for Pokemon Go, WHY would they try to change the UI again It was fine, nothing needed fixing, and we've already seen everyone complain about changes because it messes with your muscle memory Watch them revert the change in a week... Again

Pokemon Go summary screen. They added a new appraisal button above the usual options button, taking the appraisal option out of that menuThe options menu, now with the "appraisal" option removed, has "favorite" in its former place

I opened a new account with US Bank to take advantage of a promotion. Just realized they have not sent me a debit card yet. Turns out because it hasn't yet been funded (payday hasn't hit yet) Like I kinda get it... But it's going to make things inconvenient when it's time to pay rent

nothing exemplifies the predatory nature of big tech like surveillance pricing. there's absolutely no way to justify it as somehow beneficial to the consumer. it's just flat out "if we clock you as someone who can afford it we're gonna fucking raise the price for you, specifically."

Mayor Wilson, Councilmember Foster, Councilmember Saka and I are teaming up to ban surveillance pricing at grocery chains in Seattle. Surveillance pricing is a harmful practice where your data is weaponized against you to price gouge. (1/2)
