Tagging human work is descriptive: the piece exists, labels come after. Prompting a model is prescriptive: labels come first and the output is generated to fit them. Was thinking about it, and turns out Baudrillard had a line for this in 1981: “the map precedes the territory.”

Sam Altman said people are just gonna have to die in order to implement AI. In the very same week, Anthropic claimed it’s a human rights violation to be mean to the computer. These people need to be held accountable. They think lines of code are a person with rights but living people are debris.

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

Anthropic banning “abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude in its new usage policies is proof to me that tech companies are going to moderate violence against AI before they ever moderate violence against women and minorities

Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

It really irks me when people share their 300, 600, 1000 day Duolingo streaks but still don't know how to use Japanese. Here's an explanation for why apps like Duolingo don't work for learning to any fluency. jtalkonline.com/why-apps-lik...

3 episodes into Kazakh Scary Tales and it’s dope, unique and very competently done. Imagine Dark in a remote Kazakh village, with True Detective, Supernatural and gory Asian horror mixed in. Not afraid to get silly for a second, then vile and brutal the next. Highly recommend.

If you want my opinion on the latest trending thing: I hope whoever started anthropomorphising generative models, and whoever keeps spreading the idea that “AI” has “agency,” gets what they deserve.

Got into an argument about DLSS5. Sure, the memes are about misapplying it to games that were not designed for it (Higurashi, Persona, BRC, whatever), and the usecase are ball & gun games.

please ignore this game, suda and james gunn are not involved, it’s an AI game (confirmed) from a company that loves AI play an actual suda game on steam right now called KILLER7, which is one of the best games ever made also no more heroes and the silver case and killer is dead, just to name more

"LibreOffice 26.8 contains no generative AI features. Documents are not transmitted to remote services for processing, and no component of the suite requires network access to function. This is a deliberate position."
