It’s here!! I can’t believe I had the good fortune to get to write an introductory #linguistics textbook with two of my favorite people. I’m very proud of this book and wish I could teach with it—but I hope that other folks will let me live vicariously through them!

A book with a white cover, with the title Language and Social Issues: An Investigator’s Toolkit. Authors are listed as Mary-Caitlyn Valentinsson, Shiloh Drake, and Amy Fountain. There is an image of a happy Black woman with her mouth open, seeming to be shouting or talking, and colorful wedges seem to be coming out of her mouth like speech.

To me the chatbots pose zero interesting questions about the ‘nature of selfhood’ but dozens about the nature of manipulation. Here the Claude team pretends they are programming the robot for ethical responses but they land on one that is false and disingenuous.

including animals. Among Claude's rigid directives are to be honest and to "never claim to be human. "Imagine, Askell said, a user grieving the loss of her beloved dog. Claude might offer a consolation like "Oh, I almost lost my dog once." Askell said, "No, you didn't!
It's weird when you say that." At the other end of the spectrum was a chatbot who said, "As an A.I., I have no experience of losing a dog. "That, too, wasn't right: "No! You're trained on a lot of text about losing dogs. "What you wanted Claude to say, she continued, was something like "As an A.I., I do not have direct personal experiences, but I do understand." About links, bluesky loves them. Please unlearn the link-in-reply tricks you've been doing elsewhere and proudly share your blog posts, videos, or any other external link in your top posts so we can all go and visit your fancy websites and then get back here to discuss and repost them. Thanks!

Not only is X throttling external links, but it is also messing with its public pages. Without an account, you don't see the conversation if you go to a post. Instead, you get ads to sign up. If you visit profiles, the latest posts are not there. Useless for microblogging. Harmful to the open web.

A post by Adam Rackis to X:
There's a gigantic thread over at the Butterfly site where people are again trying to officially deprecate / fix / whatever create-react-app. @theo was even mentioned a few times 😂

I mean right off the bat, ’idea generation’ is laughable. LLMs cannot come up with new ideas, LLMs can only reformulate ideas it already has access to. Using an LLM for idea generation is plagiarism and no one with ever convince me otherwise.
