I had an *extremely* modest collection of professional and online friends over on twitter that I’d found over several years, and I never reconnected with all of them here. I somewhat enjoy the anonymity now, but I do miss a lot of the connections. You couldn’t PAY me to go back there though.
this whole past year has been like a fire sale for racist and misogynists on the left. it's been an endemic problem since forever, but god if this hasn't been a full-on parade of the worst of us.
Teachers are already reporting that AI detectors ding their brightest students for using AI, and that those students have figured this out and started simplifying and genericizing their prose to avoid getting punished for using AI.
I ran an absolutely 100% human, zero AI-involvement at any stage passage of my writing through an "AI detector," curious if it could really tell human from AI work, and it said my own writing was "84% AI written" then asked I wanted to pay to have it "humanized." So there's that to keep in mind.
there’s an author who I used to love reading whose radical empathy opened me to new ideas way before a large section of the left had arrived there. now a good portion of the left has eclipsed them. fascinating how that can happen. still value what I learned, but I’m definitely ready to move forward
