One thing I’ve realized in recent years is that in Twain Studies, thanks to Jonathan Arac, we have a meticulous account of how Huck Finn became a “classic” (i.e. canonical). And it was not via an organic process of critical & communal aesthetic discernment. Canonization is an exercise of power.
