Witch-hunts targeted women with financial independence and status. In colonial New England, women from families w/o male heirs made up 64% of the females prosecuted for witchcraft, 76% of those who were found guilty and 89% of those who were executed. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...
What makes a woman a witch? Financial independence
Women aren’t being burnt at the stake any more, but there is still risk and violence implicit in the label ‘witch’

Anyone who doesn’t see how very satisfied I’ve been throughout production doesn’t get what I most want out of an adaptatation. Mind you, that does tend to happen.
New in PN: Trump's red-baiting won't work "With capitalism failing so many Americans, it’s not enough for Trump to just shout 'Commies!' and assume the votes will follow -- especially when, in all his corruption and greed, he is the living embodiment of capitalism's worst version."
Trump's red-baiting won't work
He's campaigning on an even dumber version of McCarthyism.

Lemme explain what the words BELIEVE WOMEN should mean. They don't mean you have to believe women no matter what. They do mean that you have to treat women as a source the same way you'd treat a man.
This is a very important read for authors, editors, publishers, or anyone who wants to know more about the state of the industry in the face of the AI onslaught. @bonabooks.bsky.social has done an amazing job documenting their experience and their response and we can all learn from it.
AI fraud nearly derailed our next anthology. Today we’re talking about what went down, the things we missed, and publishing the report we wish we’d had when it happened. Read all about it on our new blog, and download the full report:
One of the biggest lies of the AI bubble is that Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta are "growing because of AI." In reality, they're using the continued growth of their other business units to cover the meager returns from AI, and the massive waste of their trillion+ in capex.
Here's my full interview with CNBC, covering my bear case against generative AI, OpenAI's questionable finances, AI's lack of ROI, and how all of this is a symptom of the tech industry running out of hypergrowth ideas. It's great to see the mainstream media discussing this. youtu.be/TtmPccUTDP8?...

I'm so tired of being gaslit by disingenuous fascists.
Blanche: "You have have Biden pointing to [the Charlottesville white supremacist rally] as an example of a major problem, & you have the same organization [the SPLC] giving money to an individual who helped organize it. So if you feel there's a man behind the curtain, in this case you were right."

I don’t think this is a pose but a progressive revolt against Benedict, led by a wing of the Church that had been marginalized. Francis opened the door and now Leo is putting wind in these clerics’ sails
I sincerely wonder if, in this current cultural moment, the Catholic Church sees this as an opportunity to restore some public esteem and trust by being outspoken and courageous about a human welfare crisis after publicly fumbling the ball abysmally over their own human welfare crisis
why does this feel like one of those kids-read-the-news bits

Apparently a lot of museums are struggling in the post-COVID era; people got out of the habit of visiting. So they'd probably really appreciate your visit.
One idea to continue the space (and air) joy is to go and visit your local museums that feature both flight and spaceflight. This is something my dad actively encouraged in me as a kid. I'm actually planning some road trips around these kinds of places this year.
I'm one of those trans women. I worked ground ops for Artemis I. I am torn between celebrating the success of my friends and peers and grieving how my dream of working for NASA was shattered by hateful assholes in Tallahassee
congratulations to the astronauts who get credit for a moon mission using rocket development work by trans women who had to quit their job and flee the state of florida and can’t celebrate this win with their coworkers
all these universities kept axing medieval history departments as if they thought tyrants beefing with the Pope was going to stop being relevant
I've studied so many concentration camps through history that held vulnerable people in just this kind of crowded squalor. You demonize people, you demand more arrests, this is what you get. It already has its own budget and its own momentum, and is on track to go much further, unless we stop it.
“'I’ve never experienced anything like this in my entire life,' the congresswoman said, fighting back tears. "She described the way people were laying down inside as “like sardines.” “'It is frightening in there,' she said. 'It is disgusting'..." azmirror.com/2026/04/10/i...
