3 SEPTEMBER 1776, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: William Howe writes his official report of the Battle of Long Island to Lord George Germain, including a description he will live to regret of the moment he decided not to storm the Continental fortifications at Brooklyn Heights:

A 1777 representation of Sir William Howe

Transcribing a 1660 treaty that, amongst other things, forced the English and French into agreeing to abolish the slave trade in Indigenous Caribbeans in exchange for peace. Quite remarkable, and I'm happy to stand corrected if anyone has ever come across a treaty like this.

Watching this show isn’t going to get you cancelled, you won’t lose your job, you won’t be tied to a flagpole in your underwear. It just makes you a shitty person, contributing to the wealth of a bigoted monster, against the request of the people she’s harming.

As a new Harry Potter trailer makes the rounds, it bears repeating that there’s no way to watch this show without supporting J.K. Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting on the trans community.

2 SEPTEMBER 1776, NEW YORK: Washington reports to Congress that the militia are deserting in large numbers after the Battle of Long Island, discipline is failing among Continental soldiers, and he asks for permission to burn New York rather than let it fall into British hands:

Anyone have a link to the original paper? This article *begins* to suggest 11th c Northern England’s many Scandinavian connections, but I’d love to know how the skull shape could tell us this man was Scandinavian (especially given 11th c Northern England’s many Scandinavian connections…)

Researchers find Britain’s 11th-century ‘Conquest Man’ was Scandinavian – but did he land with the Norman army? www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

Let’s try again: I’d like to hear about new research from Scottish historians. Especially ECRs whose work may not get much attention. This is because I have a newspaper column where I publicise new work by Scottish historians! Tell me about your research!

My favourite grasshopper fact: Grasshoppers first appeared on the planet 250 million years ago. Grass did not appear on the planet until 40 million years ago Imagine it: 210 million years, hopping around on any random surface you can find, waiting for the grass that will make you truly yourself.

Hi British and IOR scholars: anybody knows the provenance or have any information about Michael Robin Crompton who was the chief administrator of the British Indian Ocean Territory from 1988-1990. I expect him to be in FCO, but I can't find any trace.
