man I will just never get over the fact that the collective response to the pandemic, and an absolutely miraculous vaccine development, was to destroy public health in this country and smear everyone involved I generally take a positive view of humanity overall but it's so depressing

Ted’s thread is right. I think that having a solid, shared basis of knowledge is important for a society to understand where it has been, and how the past continues to shape it today. Sharpening the public’s historical memory is essential for self-reflection and self-awareness. Social cohesion? Meh.
Ted McCormick@tedmccormick.bsky.social · 5mo agoI worry quite a bit when I hear “social cohesion” invoked as a justification for studying history, since it’s long been in the mouths of people denouncing (and, in the US, banning) “divisive” accounts of the past — such as those attentive to migration, race, slavery and empire.
