Irishman in D.C. Happy to debate policy but not people’s right to exist. It takes a village …

Haters focusing on Liddle's violence toward his pregnant partner, his galloping racism, or his repeated defences of paedophilia, should remember to mention he was also one of the worst writers to ever do it. A calorie-free hack of the first water. Just absolute dogshit, back to front.

Another one was back in 1990 (pre email) exchanging information with Aer Lingus head office back in Dublin about project issues with Kuwait Airways. As the replies came out on a teletype printer that the KU staff would see, we communicated sensitive stuff in (very basic) Irish. Pre Google Translate!

what are some absurd work situations you can share? once i got called into a meeting i had nothing to do with because the consultant brought an engineer and no one in the room could understand him, so they asked me to translate. he was scouse. i translated from english to english.

Working for British Airways in Heathrow in 1994 on their cargo system. One of the users of that system was the Ministry of Defense. When the Whitehall brass visited for project meetings, I (with my Irish accent) was sent to a different floor. Mind you, the IRA were mortar bombing LHR at the time.

You sometimes see Government TDs pointing out that Ireland isn’t unique in the world in having a housing crisis. But this graph in today’s Financial Times shows just how extreme ours is compared to the places elsewhere, which also describe themselves as a in a housing crisis.

The share of young adults living with their parents is climbing in many countries and cities, with Ireland leading the way % of people aged 25-34 who live with their parents. National averages vs major regions

[5 line graphs. Ireland’s is sharply above 40% since 2010. The rest show US, U.K., Canada and Australia. The next highest result is the US at just over 20%]

Among all the other things that annoy me about this, is the argument that she was just a faithful Catholic and listening to her faith when she was gung-ho for the death penalty. She wasn't getting that from her religion. Nor a shite ton of other suff. She was just a garden variety bigot.

Ann Widdecombe’s death should make Britain ask itself: what sort of political culture do we want? | Gaby Hinsliff

I'm happy. Not because England lost but because their media would be intolerable in the event of a World Cup victory. Jingoism cranked up to new heights, Oasis music on every highlight reel, TV presenters being smug, hastily compiled TV specials about how football came home. We've been spared.

RIP Sam Neill. Sometimes greatness is seen when it is removed and what remains feels diminished. The foundation that Sam Neill and Helen McCrory built in the first two seasons of ‘Peaky Blinders’ launched that show. Despite Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy, Insp. Campbell was the best male character.
