Indigo-dyed fabric can't run or stain other items, even if they tint washing water dark blue: the blue form is passive and doesn't bond with cloth. To dye things with indigo you need to do some fiddly chemistry to put it in a water-soluble yellow-green form, which turns blue when exposed to air.
