LLMs are purely statistical engines that operate on purely formal objects (character strings). We can “train” an LLM to distinguish true from false or fact from opinion or warranted from baseless just as soon as we can figure out how to reduce semantics and epistemology to syntax (which is never)

As I keep pointing out, does no one understand Ricardian comparative advantage anymore. FACT: China produces over 1 million engineering graduates per year FACT: To date, China has not produced a single internationally marketable game show format Where does it look like our advantage lies?
A cheery message from the new minister responsible for research funding for the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences (and the subjects that the majority of UK taught undergraduate and Masters students study).
if I become president I will correct this oversight
Convinced that about 80 percent of our built environment procedures are unnecessary and literally exist because people thought the problem was process when actually the problem is building for cars. Just don’t build for cars.
I always knew Melbourne FLA would get an NFL game someday.
Map produced from the perspective of Galicia but applicable to the world before the revolutionary changes brought by arrival of the railway. By sea: A Coruña to London: 5 days. By land: Coruña to Madrid; 20 days.
“what’s something cool that people outside your field don’t know?” DASHES. the difference between dashes is really important and if we do not uphold it, it probably means the end of civilization
Dune (the first one) is a very smart book but largely by accident.
this discourse bores me, lets do hotly held low stakes opinions. Tabasco sauce is overrated and if you enjoy it on anything other than fries youre a bad person

I need a moratorium on CS guys talking about theories of cognition until they've taken at least one graduate level course on the subject, ran their thoughts by at least one PhD in neuroscience, and have detoxed from AI chatbots for at least one week beforehand
I mean nothing *can* change? an LLM remains a syntax engine incapable of engaging with communicative intent [pragmatics] or mapping between words and things [semantics]. If you have a syntax problem that's fine but the only people who do are "people using a programming language they are bad at".
one thing i will say is that things are changing fast enough that if your priors are more than a month old, you need to challenge them again! astra for example is a very significant step forward for a lot of people's tasks.
Not only that: I have a dark suspicion that the English elite's traditional educational syllabus—heavy on classics, both Roman and Greek—is a hidden in plain sight grooming tradition. In which case it goes back at least to the 18th century.
Saxony-Anhalt has amongst Germany's lowest migrant population. (about 9%). As in Australia, success for anti immigrant parties is most likely in areas with already low levels of migration.

Indigo-dyed fabric can't run or stain other items, even if they tint washing water dark blue: the blue form is passive and doesn't bond with cloth. To dye things with indigo you need to do some fiddly chemistry to put it in a water-soluble yellow-green form, which turns blue when exposed to air.

The *price* of housing is basically a fixed fraction of income, dialing the quality / size / cost up or down just affects how much of that price has to be spent by homebuilders to reach that standard and how much is left over to be sucked up by landowners. High-standard housing is nearly cost-free.
Honestly, I think even without the targetting of the RNLI, the median view of uniformed fascist thugs is "It's very unfair that if I kill them I go to jail, but when grandad killed a bunch of them he got the Military Medal"
Without being glib at all: transphobes are sociopaths and this applies to your faves
The progression of certain thinkers from denying the validity of trans people to denying the validity of disabilities is a nice illustration of the way in which transphobic habits of mind can quickly evolve into a kind of acquired sociopathy.
