Recent PhD graduate, local foodie, and avid D&D player from the Friedman Lab studying novel mediators of mitochondrial dynamics @UTSW
Reminder to join us tomorrow at 12pm ET!
Join us March 26th at 12pm ET - @asbmb.bsky.social LRD seminar series. We have two great mitochondria-focused lipid talks planned from @jasoncasler.bsky.social from @lllackner.bsky.social's lab and Kailash Venkatraman from @ibudin.bsky.social's lab. Register here! www.asbmb.org/meetings-eve...
My New Year’s resolution is to berate myself less for things I wish I could have done better, to learn from my mistakes, and give myself more credit for the things I did well but promptly forgot/ignored because academics love to live from crisis to crisis
Each of us contributes incrementally to a future we may never see. If it is in our lifetime, if our science, or our contribution, is part of a practical solution, it will likely be one sentence in a vast tome with contributions from thousands of authors across dozens of (not just science) fields.
Every holiday break, I’m like, “I’m going to catch up on my work and reading papers…” and then every break I just end up sleeping like a hibernating bear.
As you're planning out your ASCB schedule be sure to attend the organelle-focused special interest group hosted by @nieminm.bsky.social and myself Mon. 12/16 at 5pm Come hear a fantastic lineup of speakers including @walterwchen.bsky.social @themitotracker.bsky.social @lianjiejerrywei.bsky.social
Please join @labfriedman.bsky.social & @nieminm.bsky.social at the Organelle Biogenesis, Turnover, & Quality Control session tonight at 5pm in room 28C if you're interested in cool new mediators that regulate organelles! 😎 I'll be giving a talk here ~5:40pm
Never found my school's 🦋, so I hope it's ok that I'm posting this myself. I'm presenting my poster today on characterizing internal mediators of mitochondrial fission at 11:15am at poster #B143! If you missed my #MitoTalks last month, please stop by! #CellBio24 #mitofission #microscopy
If you are at #cellbio2024, please consider coming to the Membrane Contact Sites session tomorrow (12/16) at 5pm in room 29C! Many great talks planned! I will be presenting “Keep Calmin and Carry On: Tethering the ER to F-actin Enables Cell Migration” at 6. Hope to see you there!
The #CellBio2024 Exhibit Hall is open! Meet our editors and ask all of your publication-related questions! 🔬📝 See you at Booth #520 😎

Finally, If you missed last week's MitoChat & are interested in my work, I will be presenting again at #ASCB24 so keep a look out for that as well!
Incredible! I've also been selected for the Andreas Doncic Travel Award from the cell biology department at UTSW! Congrats to all the winners (most of whom are on my floor & whose work I've followed for most of my PhD)! 🤩 What a year this has been!
After our #SciArt subgroup at #CellBio2024, join us for a very special Science Art Show & Reception, where you'll get to interact with our amazing speakers and other pioneers in this field. We are honored to feature over 30 scientists/artists in the exhibition! RSVP: beatascienceart.com/artshow2024/
Think mitochondria are networks of cylindrical tubes? not always! Check out poster by @gavsturm.bsky.social "Mitochondrial Pearling: an emerging class of organelle dynamics explained by a biophysical pearling instability" tomorrow Sunday Dec 15 11:45-12:45 B145
Happy to announce that I survived the plane ride to San Diego (I'm afraid of heights)! Look at this view 🤩 Ready for ASCB
Shout out to those of us who feel so overwhelmed & exhausted and yet continue to add, “just one more” thing to life in hopes that it helps!

just saw a post that said "maybe you don't finish your projects because you'd rather have it undone than done imperfectly" and I fear I've been impaled 💀🪦

Scientists, academics, researchers: We’re excited to share that @altmetric.com is now tracking mentions of your research on Bluesky! 🧪
There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research. A Place of Joy.

This the season... for the last MITOtalk in 2024. When translation is no longer enough to understand what is going on, our speaker will tell us what happens after.
What jobs do PhD students get in today's economy who *specifically* enjoy writing the discussion part of their thesis?
The academic's ability to suddenly fall asleep or be distracted by the most mundane things in order to avoid specific work they don't wanna do.
Another successful Thanksgiving with some besties from lab 🥳! Did a lot of Turkish coffee fortune telling on life after the PhD
