Of course, Star Trek was an inspiration to Technocrats in every Convention, from Progenitor exobiologists to Iteration X cyberneticists. Even the Syndicate, though more as an early example of modern fandom as it relates to franchise loyalty and tie-in merchandising.
You can always tell which Void Engineers were inspired to get into the field by Star Trek, because they're simultaneously the easiest to get along with on the job and the hardest to talk to about anything outside the job.

It's also the only way to have a ghost of a chance that when things inevitably go sideways, we'll find out in time to fix the mess.

It's a word that's rendered meaningless and, to the average voter, probably pretty boring. Moreso than Americans embracing socialism, I think they just plain don't give a shit anymore.
One of my earliest takes on Musk after getting to know more about his beliefs and stated goals was that he was one of those guys I knew who read a *lot* of Heinlein in high school and college, and missed the point entirely.

Absolute drivel. It would take a centuries-old conspiracy of scientists, engineers, and sociologists to even put together a framework for the infrastructure required for such a thing, and it would have to have been planned from the first sale of the first phone. Ridiculous.
