It’s hard to understate how Copenhagen it was in Victoria yesterday. That thousands of people filtered their way to the waterfront on bikes for a 45 minute airshow and then left as smoothly as they arrived is testament to the space-efficiency of the bicycle, and the city’s commitment to enabling it.

Saw this photo from yesterday of the free bike valet service yesterday in #VictoriaBC for the free Canadian Snowbirds performance over the ocean along Dallas Road. Wow #YYJ you are doing the #cyclinglife great, setting an example for the rest of #NorthAmerica let alone #Canada. #gobbybike #bikesky

Hundreds of cyclists using the bike valet in Victoria BC

Most of BC is experiencing far worse wildfire smoke, not to mention all the homes and businesses burned and lives disrupted by evacuations. Wildfires are becoming more and more severe due to fossil fuels like oil and gas (LNG). Talk about it when discussing the bit of smoke in #yyj

Air quality at sea level is holding at “moderate risk” while anything over 100m or so above sea level is hitting “very high” AQI, at 105 in James Bay… But wind has changed direction, from the east, & over the mountains across the sea, it’s nearly 200 AQI. Air is projected to worsen today, #yyj.

I recently made hay over @globalnews.ca.web.brid.gy use of the phrase 'human caused' to avoid the climate dimension and blame the fires on the spark that started them. bsky.app/profile/thim... "Some dumb human with a cigarette butt set the whole world on fire.

@johnvaillant.bsky.social, @katharinehayhoe.com, @jeffgoodell.bsky.social are communicators available for comment. This article: globalnews.ca/news/1200346... which bizarrely focuses on the drop in wildfires due to changing agricultural practice, quotes @mikeflannigan.bsky.social.

Climate change never ignites a fire. That’s almost always humans or lightning. But it’s clear when we examine the data that climate heating sets the table for fires that burn faster and larger. Since the 1980s temperatures during fire season in the Pacific NW have warmed around 4°F… 1/

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Those who believe things like this are working hard at not understanding the finite options available to someone whose abuser has not been prosecuted, found guilty, etc. by the law. And how rarely those things happen to abusers, esp. high-status white male abusers.

Rep. Max Miller: "These are incredibly serious criminal accusations. If these accusations were true, I would be in jail — I would be. My former wife would not have been offering to cook me dinner and inviting me to playgrounds. Think about that."

One key thing about reactionary centrism is that if you argue for the conservative position on purely savvy electoral grounds long enough ... you start to just believe the conservative position. I'm watching this happen in climate as the RC brigade becomes more & more explicitly pro-fossil fuels.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social · 4d ago

It was inevitable that reactionary centrists would turn against harm reduction and call for a return to mass incarceration

Remember when David Hogg was running for DNC chair and the establishment stepped in and said we needed a responsible adult and then gave us Ken Martin, who throws his phone at his staffers? Also the DNC is $2 million in debt. But centrists still demand they should be in charge.

And I am not saying Hogg is the answer, I’m saying the people who claim to know the “correct” way to proceed are fucking morons and all they do is lose.

"Scientists discovered and developed the COVID vaccines that brought the pandemic to an end. It’s the anti-vaxxers, not the scientific community, who should stand indicted in the light of 2026." This should be the conservative stance btw, from former Bush speech writer @davidfrum.bsky.social

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed more than 1,500 people in just over two months, and it is spreading much faster than previous outbreaks, the nation’s health ministry reported on Thursday.

But I think @jayrosen.bsky.social gets to the real sin here: pressthink.org/2016/11/miss... "now we can see that underneath it was an even bigger failure: they failed to flag the retreat from empiricism as a pattern that could replicate. That’s more than a missed story." That's the pattern.
