The interesting thing about school closures during covid (agree with them or not) is they had much less impact on long-term academic outcomes than people expected (me included). But much more long-term impact on mental health and attendance.

If the masonry crossing tower was 79 m when it was complete 1222 (timber spire may be a bit later, but was up by the 1250s as Matthew Paris is using it as an emblem of the City of London by then) it would have been absolutely extraordinary. but then in so many ways London Cathedral was extraordinary

In 2024, I was at the Hay Festival, and so was Ukrainian author and public intellectual Andrei Kurkov, author of Death and the Penguin. Also appearing at the festival was Bonnie Tyler. They were in the green room at the same time, so the event photographer snapped a picture of the pair of them.
