I got to guest on Tommy's new podcast! It was really great to chat about the book in such detail, he asked really interesting questions and we got into a lot of the good stuff behind why I wrote it and why I care about it. And also how we're both stupid. Order Next Level here: linktr.ee/next_level

The second episode of the podcast is out now! Our first guest on the podcast is @mtrc.bsky.social, procedural generation researcher and author of the new book 'Next Level: Making Games That Make Themselves'. YouTube: youtu.be/KJNoLluJCss #GameAI #PCG #GameAIPodcast #Podcast #GameDev

I'm thrilled to say our very first guest on the AI and Games Podcast is none other than the wonderful @mtrc.bsky.social. With his new book Next Level hitting bookshelves I wanted to chat with him about the process of making a book about generative design in an age where the term is rather loaded.

yes! as someone who’s been working in procedural text before LLMs were a thing, I really wish people had a sense of the varieties of procgen writing that *aren’t* genAI output. there’s a ton of stuff we can do (including pre-LLM, ML style AI) that’s nothing like chatbot output directly in a game.

Matthew Kirschenbaum@mkirschenbaum.bsky.social · 2w ago

Thank you! Very illuminating. We’re so fixated on genAI right now, it’s useful to be reminded of the varieties of synthetic and procedural text flowing through different kinds of experiences.

Months of work, a lifetime of learning, but the Levelling The Playing Field 101 Courses program launches right now. Eight €40 courses launching 10 days apart, I aim to make the critical less-spoken parts of indie gamedev accessible away from expensive visa-locked hotel bars. courses.ramiismail.com

Had a great week at Develop. Lovely to see so many and sadly miss chatting with others. Going to these events is good for the soul as you meet people who value the work we're doing. My favourite was one lad patting me on the shoulder saying "keep it up mate, get after those c*nts". Classic.

I'm busy trying to burn alive at Develop, but wanted to point out this is a nothingburger of a headline. Studios that make online games have been using Machine Learning for preference analysis and user prediction for decades. The only change is now they use LLMs. www.eurogamer.net/generative-a...

According to a poll, Generative AI is being used at a whopping 100% Japanese online game developers, as copyright infringement concerns climb

The JOGA Online Game Market Research Report 2026 has revealed a stunning statistic from developers, while also highlighting key concerns from players.

I couldn't stomach writing anything about Xbox this week. Besides, I doubt the headlines are over just yet. For now let's talk about Godot, and why AI-generated code has become a big issue for them this past year. Resulting in bans on GitHub pull requests suspected of using Generative AI tools.

AI and Games@aiandgames.com · 4w ago

This week's edition has @tommy.aiandgames.com discuss the recent ban by @godotengine.org on AI-tools being used in submissions to the engine's code repository. As coding agents are on the rise, it's important we maintain responsibility for the code that we ship! www.aiandgames.com/p/godot-make...

Getting a lot of eyeballs at the moment, so, if you’ve also announced an indie game recently, reply here and show off your wares with a trailer. If you’re reading this later, go checkout these games and get them wishlisted (you know, just like you’ve already wishlisted Vampirium: 1997)

Generally keeping off socials because I'm too pissed off about the recent round of Xbox layoffs. That said... It's one thing to propose shutting down a studio as they announce a game, but it's some proper bullshit to lay off half the studio as they launch the damn thing.

I've spent an inordinate amount of time these past two years trying to find funding so that we can build @conference.aiandgames.com into something people want to attend. Trying to find cost effective means to execute on basic things is a huge time sink. While ensuring sponsorship doesn't poison it

This is actually a prime place for government or local authority cash to fill the gap. Cut or cover the cost of the basics of an event - venue hire, AV hire etc - and you can really focus on delivering a great event that people will go to.

It's been really cool to see how one AI bot in Forza has become something of a meme. So I figured I'd dig into why this is happening. Plus I address how the system changed after my video on Forza's AI in 2021. While we don't know how 100%, it's clear the old system has since been scrapped.
