Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?

Over the last 24 hrs TikTok’s algorithm started showing a series of AI animated shorts hating on poor people, people in housing commissions, people with disabilities, people on welfare… Media outlets worry about the effect of social media on children, but this is poisonous for *anyone*

People, including myself admittedly, complain about the quality of some discourse on this platform but having gone onto Instagram and looked at the replies to popular posts, my god. People voicing fragmentary thoughts that make no sense, people who cannot understand a minute of video, every post

people, tomorrow is the Sunday news roundtable shows and shit. do what you like but just a thought, those shows are ass and the clips we post to get mad about stuff are taking up space that might be better suited to good jokes

Take a break from being depressed that everything you love is being destroyed by slop for a moment and let me tell you about the beautiful symbiotic relationship between graffiti writers, train yard workers, and model train enthusiasts.
