It feels like there’s a particular theme developing in the academics this magazine is targeting, but I can’t quite put my finger on it
I can’t take this shit much longer. What a legend. Owned every role. Was perfect in every role. One of the few actors who could be absolutely delightful and deeply terrifying. Damn, man. Damnit.
Tim Curry, the offbeat British actor who specialized in playing eccentrics like the seductive, cross-dressing scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and such fiendish villains as Pennywise the Clown from Stephen King’s It, has died. He was 80. bit.ly/4wOSlqy

Silicon Valley Is Reviving the Discredited and Discriminatory Idea of ‘Race Science’
Scientific racism today must be seen and rejected for what it truly is—a hollow attempt to dress discrimination in the garb of science and reason

I don't understand how it would be possible to define racist in a way that would not include Cofnas's explictly expressed beliefs in a racial hierarchy. What does he think a racist is?!
So called "race realist" objects to being "smeared" as racist
Look, it's only that the main child subject of the documentary advocating for removing medication went back on his medication and that the experts involved have withdrawn their testimony, everything else holds up
Am I shocked that the programme seemingly specifically designed to attack neurodivergent individuals and diminish our support needs twisted evidence to attack us and diminish support needs? Uhm...no. Not even remotely. It fits a pattern in coverage seen right now. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...
I think it's key to understanding their worldview that they imagine a world not *without* immigrants, but one in which immigrants' inferiority is permanently asserted and they become a subservient caste. All these people worship the Gulf States.
What is the right-wing vision for a world where immigrants have been deported and public services cut? Care and other services would dry up. The return of living in squalor for those beyond working age? The workhouse? The pauper’s grave?
Oh. My. God. Steven Pinker just used Arday’s suicide to promote preorders of his new book. And it is even more draw-dropping crass than that makes it sound. He uses it to CONDESCENDINGLY promote his own book. That is not what the better angels of our nature would do.
yikes
sometimes i’m taken aback by how draconian UK defamation law seems, but on the other hand it’s pretty clear that British journalists can’t be trusted with free speech
Everybody I follow on BlueSky said what Arday did was wrong and should be fired, but that the right wing media went after him wildly out of proportion with his significance. But the bigot-apologists need to pretend that BlueSky is the Red Brigades to rationalize their collaboration.
There are some good people working in the media but there are also those who can only be described as inhumane soulless scum, who will do anything for clicks and headlines with zero regard for the consequences and no remorse. We shouldn’t shy away from this.
There is a difference between scrutiny and entertainment. Jason Arday’s career posed questions, but they shouldn’t have become obsessional. Journalism should seek truth, but not public humiliation.
I think as a society we’re becoming crueller, more hateful, less forgiving In large part because it makes some of the worst people alive a lot of money - hate sells, love doesn’t But also because life is getting harder, and many people want to take their anger out on people they can reach and ruin
I feared this would happen. His story was troubling but the wave of hatred and obsession in the media when he was clearly someone who was vulnerable - whatever you thought of him - was entirely disproportionate and in my view fuelled by racists. My thoughts are with his loved ones tonight.
🔺 BREAKING: Jason Arday, the former University of Cambridge professor, has been found dead, police have said Mr Arday was pronounced dead after being found “unresponsive” at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday afternoon Read more 👇
I don’t think there’s ever been a clearer example of the British media bullying someone, who was so clearly vulnerable, to death so shamelessly in my lifetime for engagement and clicks And now we’ll have to watch the people that did it claim they’re shocked, and horrified Revolting
From this review- “Think of all the diligent, decent black academics who have been lumbered with the embarrassment of having Arday as a figurehead” - no, think of *why* black academics are held collectively responsible in ways that white academics are not
I think functionally all of the post-resignation coverage that was about him rather than Cambridge was excessive (e.g. this poisonous review of a book nobody is going to buy - why)
Again I note that parts of the right are literally trying to turn empathy into a negative and that this is a bad thing.
I wish media outlets would describe Nathan Cofnas as a racist rather than a "self-defined race realist" which doesn't mean anything to most people. His writing meets any definition of racism however narrowly and cautiously drawn.
Nathan Cofnas is responsible for this man's death. End of story.
Every single article should include Nathan Cofnas’ name as the instigator of this.
Holy fucking shit Jason Arday found dead
saying this not as a dig to Paul but as a general point, but it does worry me that we've ended up in a world where the two options are seemingly "leftist bubble" or "oh hey the nazis are here" - surely we should be able to have a politically heterogenous platform with tight rules on hate speech etc?
The new CEO of Bluesky wants to change Bluesky from being a leftist bubble. The thing is, there’s nothing wrong with being a leftist bubble: the idea that everything has to be all-encompassing and suitable for everyone is a trap. 🧵 1/4
Spain, now holders of the European, Olympic and World titles. Prodigious.
🫱🏻🫲🏽 Lamine Yamal and Leo Messi. A few years later…
okay now that Declan Rice has scored one now they need to convert to a back 5 and park the bus
Kind of annoying that the commentary team think all the French players suddenly lost form rather than Spain coming up with a system that neutralised them.
