Tim Curry was a beacon. everywhere he went he told you it was safe for freaks and misfits. After Rocky Horror everything he touched became more interesting. It had Tim Curry, it had to be ok. Special shoutout his Darkness in Legend. The velvety pinnacle of screen devils.

Here's the official announcement of Parton's passing from her reps, along with the request that in lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com
Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com
#BREAKING: Over dissents from the three Dem. appointees, #SCOTUS has *granted* the Trump administration’s request to freeze a district court injunction that had blocked the mail-in ballots executive order. But Trump’s EO remains blocked by a different injunction in a different case—at least for now:

Fascism is not (sorry Marxist friends!) a product of hyper-capitalism. Social democracies produce fascists; communist countries, through an almost political carcinization, come to resemble fascist regimes (see: Stalinism or North Korea or the evolution of the CCP into a authoritarian nationalism).
I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.
That said, I think at this point, we can conclude that fascism is a latent political force in basically every country, to a greater or lesser degree and so you need to be thinking, "what if my country goes fascist? what if a neighboring country does?" and plan for how to avoid or deal with that.
These are great points. I’ll add, Odyssey seems to shift perspective, on Nolan’s theme. The hero wants to take responsibility, but Athena won’t let him. He ends up taking his punishment from Poseidon, but only his, & he follows Penelope’s advice, which he should’ve done from the start.
saw the odyssey, had some thoughts youtu.be/BLkZk9BN2Q4
There are going to be Democrats who say we shouldn’t rip it all out — it’s already built, we have other priorities — but removing the visible signs of Trumpism is absolutely necessary.
The vandalism and desecration of the White House isn't just vanity and it's not trivial. It's caesarism, as in literally what Julius Caesar did to the symbolic architecture of civic republicanism. Our national iconography matters and allowing the disfiguring of it to persist is a substantive harm.
Mamdani is succeeding in part by projecting joy Ossoff is succeeding in part by projecting steely ferocity We’re in a moment when attitude is nearly as powerful as ideology, because we all need courage. And these are two ways of summoning it
I just ordered this myself. Trump is only the symptom of this problem.
I just finished this, and highly recommend. For Bay Area folks especially, even if some of the broad strokes and idiots are quite familiar, it's startling to see so much of this noxious ideology be home grown.

The catering cart memes are doing me in ☠️😭 Please add any I missed in the replies. We need this laugh.
Not that this goes to the deeper issues people are discussing. But the Thanksgiving Holiday has basically nothing to do with the Pilgrims or anything to do with settlers or later white Americans interactions with American Indians. The holiday didn't start with the Pilgrims. The modern day ...

I would like to see more companies admit this - being a public company no longer means running a successful, thriving business. It strictly means delivering growth to investors, every single quarter, who do not care at all about the product the company sells or the people who produce it.
Savage.
What the Iranian attack confirms is that Trump is no longer capable of operating in the real world when it dissents from the Trump as God Emperor narrative. He can't process information that dissents from the narrative. Thus he cannot lead or protect us; and we are in danger bsky.app/profile/did:...

Ok I’m all in
It’s a fascinating review b/c she both accurately describes the film & hugely misunderstands its goals. She states her criteria of a good version, but it’s not what Nolan’s trying to do. She may speak ancient Greek, but not modern Epic Movie. She’s grateful for it, tho, & I’m glad for the debate.
(The whole review is worth reading and considering, btw, just to head off any dishonest interpretations of my very blithe premise. This is the most intelligent public discourse we're going to get all year. And it's about got damn Homer! Incredible. Maybe we do have a real culture)
I’m enjoying this Emily Wilson translation of Nolan’s The Odyssey!
There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.
And again, it doesn’t even matter if these were true. He, a random unelected and unappointed guy, doesn’t get to end run the law, Constitution, & Congress to decide how to set policy. He did, & therefore needs to go to jail for the rest of his life.
Musk still relying on conspiracy theories and lies when it comes to USAID. "USAID was the biggest funder of regime change. Also, its funding was not stopped it was moved to the State Department." "There were claims [that programs were shut down]. These claims were false, nonsense."
Why has DSA grown? One argument from this research: not just ideology, but organization. Strong membership plus ongoing and continuous participation in social movements creates credibility, committed volunteers, political skills, and durable electoral capacity. www.niskanencenter.org/inside-the-d...

there is literally no amount of caveats or careful wording that will protect you from stupidity or bad faith, so you might as well say things straightforwardly and strongly to begin with.
It’s been over a week since @govandybeshear.bsky.social called on Mitch McConnell to disclose the state of his health There has been no credible, transparent response Beshear should call a #KYSpecialElection Anybody who has a problem with that should talk to Supreme Court Justice Merrick Garland
I publicly and privately urged the last administration to address the public’s concerns with the former president’s health. I’m calling on Sen. McConnell to do the same and provide voters an update on his own health. Let’s end the crazy speculation. Just tell us what’s going on.
