Born. Grew up. Took some time off.

Bartiromo: "We are waiting any moment now to get the jobs number for the month of June. The expectations call for the numbers to be up 95,000. Right now seeing the number -- actually, uh, showing a decline in jobs, uh, down 33,000, uh."

one from 2015, I think. This started as being about 'unfit people suddenly getting back into tennis because Wimbledon's on', but as I was writing turned into a thing vaguely about, being an imposter in your own job, or even your body? Which was much more interesting. it's fun when that happens

[Title panel, over an image of a tennis racquet in amongst junk in a cupboard]:

Let's Not Do This Again

Cut to a TENNIS RACQUET being held in the hand of a man called TERRY.

RACQUET:

Right.

OK.

RACQUET:
So l just sort of... *hit it with my face*.

TERRY:
Yes.

[Pull back to show TERRY - overweight, sweating, playimng tennis but surrounded by loads of balls on the ground which he’s missed].

RACQUET:
At the net.

TERRY:
Over the net.

RACQUET:
Over. Over the net, yes. Sorry.

RACQUET:
It's just, y know we haven't done this since last -

[A ball gently hits the handle of the racquet]
*POF*

RACQUET:
UUUURRGH

RACQUET:
UUURGH CHRIST
MY HANDLE

TERRY:
Ssh!

RACQUET:
IT HIT ME ON MY HANDLE TERRY

TERRY:
Stop it!

RACQUET:
No Terry! You stop it! You stop this... this... charade!

RACQUET:
I am a 1993 Head Radical in hot pink, who belongs in a cupboard. You are an unfit man who thinks he likes tennis, but in reality belongs on the sofa.

RACQUET:
Why do we do this every year, Terry?

RACQUET:
Why do we go on playing this silly -

[Ball gently hits the side of the racquet]
*KLANG*

RACQUET:
UUURRGGH IT
HIT MY SIDE BIT...

This is quite good. I’ll add to it that more than anything else, my writing skills were honed over nearly twenty years of student essays, from having the five paragraph style drilled into me in 1993 to finishing my dissertation in 2010. The mass revolt against developing this skill is devastating.

The Death of the Student Essay—and the Future of Cognition

One professor's reflections on the end of an era, as AI tools such as ChatGPT have murdered the student essay (RIP). Here's why that threatens the future of human cognition—and how to save ourselves.

20mph speed limits have shown to massively reduce injuries and deaths. So isn't it time we rolled out sharply lowered speed limits and ULEZ in all urban areas? We need to stop putting the car first, they've taken up too much infrastructure space already and keep wanting more.

Pubs are a force for good. They reinforce communities and encourage people to drink together, rather than alone in a bedsit. It follows that beer sold in pubs should be zero-rated. This would make it more affordable and stop pubs from closing.
