In 1986 we had not yet addressed the thinning of the ozone layer by signing the Montreal Protocol. We did that in 1987. The ozone layer is expected to recover fully in another ~30 years.

I was a kid in the San Fernando Valley in the 80s. The sky was brown most days. It's amazing how much better air quality has gotten, which is why it pisses me off so much that so many people just want to roll that back.
