I tend complex systems, mostly by helping people.
Humankind developed and lost the bow and arrow at least twice.

Yeah, sure would be nice, Jim…. "The F-150 Lightning will no longer be available to order in its current form, but we are working on transforming it as part of our Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform. Our support for existing owners remains fully unchanged."

Extreme weather and grid instability are unfortunately making power outages more common. Having an F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid or F-150 Lightning with a 240V Pro Power Onboard outlet means you can have a backup power source right in your driveway.

I rely on a delightful band of misfits in Missouri for inexpensive, high throughput, low power, evolved corsi-rosenthal setups to keep air quality high. They make kits using multiple small PC fans that take off-the-shelf 3M filters. www.cleanairkits.com

Clean Air Kits are super efficient air purifiers built simply from banks of silent PC pressure fans and 3M Filtrete virus+allergen filters. Quiet enough to leave on always, powerful enough to protect ...

Of course it's mostly a mixture of those two things. I've seen a lot of organizations where it is mostly the latter, and only a few organizations where it is mostly the former. The large models seem to introduce velocity, that's for sure.

"Velocity" in the part of an organization that produces machine behavior is at best a measure of bandwidth for turning adaptive capacity (people!) into the essential complexity of solutions to problems. At worst, it is a measure of bandwidth for introducing accidental complexity.

I have been thinking about Fred Brooks a lot since I decided I can't opt out of thinking about large model technology, and here is an idea I am trying on for size:

oh this is GOOD Been meaning to get the Crisis Engineering book since @anildash.com recommended it. For me, this is how we collectively fix social media and the broken web: "The team isn't sitting around a table debating options —scientists all over the world <try things in parallel>." YES.

@weaver.bsky.social once said to me that over a long enough timeline, any policy platform that is not isomorphic to "halal vs haram" is doomed because that's the level of complexity that we so far are able to make travel past multiple generational thresholds and I think about that possibly too much.
