Beginning to feel like I need to budget a week on the blog for a military primer on 'how the US Navy is the load-bearing pillar of your ability to eat bananas and of folks in developing countries to eat at all.' Not saying that is an optimal situation, merely that it is the situation.

I wrote a thing! My take on Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is up at @foreignpolicy.com foreignpolicy.com/2026/07/23/o...
Odysseus at the End of Civilization
Nolan’s film confronts the betrayal of the West’s own values.

Elon: We should build the fully automated super-trans luxury space communism from Ian Banks’s famous series “Check out this awesome fully automated super-trans luxury space communism”. This never stops being funny.
'From that point on, it was all downhill for Musk. He suggested that everyone read Iain Banks for a vision of the future, and Beddoes pointed out that Banks was a socialist. Musk insisted he wasn’t." He's either never read his "favourite" books or he's too stupid to understand them.
NASDAQ basically force-loaded about $25 billion of SpaceX stock into passive investor portfolios (aka, people's pension and retirement funds) by jamming SpaceX into its index right at IPO time rather than waiting the standard 30-60 days. Billions of dollars of unrealized losses already.
oh man passing through the 180 day lockup gate is gonna be a fucking bloodbath lol
I'm old enough to remember a time when the National Review would have been over the moon about a movie whose central premise was "the abandonment of traditional values caused a civilizational apocalypse"
They’re having a completely normal one over at the National Review this weekend
It’s kind of ironic given the film’s plot that Nolan’s Odyssey starts out putting considerable faith in the movie’s audience, only to pretty much lose it in the last hour.
‘James Joyce stands out among the great modernist writers for his belief in tolerance, equality, democracy, progress and the preciousness of the everyday. If he is outrageously experimental, he is also in thrall to the mundane and disregarded.’ Terry Eagleton: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

god forbid America had to undergo WW2 economic mobilization and rationing, do you think anyone today would accept it, lol?
it's always funny when i hear people be uber-hawkish on China when they can't even bear like, minor restrictions on going outside during wildfires conservative hawks, do you think a conflict with china is not going to involve communal sacrifice
imo it's underrated how COVID basically broke the entire idea of any sort of communal sacrifice or social contract for the right
Eric: Get up in the morning and go outside; take a deep breath and get real high. Seriously, either this is a bit, or he's got endstage oppositional defiant disorder

The problem with the realist conceptual/linguistic analysis framework is you simply *cannot* make the argumentative leap between how we use concepts/language and any purported objective structure of the world. But that is the core assumption of 'common sense' philosophy!

Couldn't possibly agree more. Historians, as a rule, connect with the vibes of a depiction of the past far more than surface-level details of costuming, locations, or even the story's relationship to real historical events.
In my experience, scholars of a particular historical period are the LEAST uptight about "accuracy" in fictional representations of their period, which is why, as a medievalist, I can assure you that A Knight's Tale is the greatest movie set in medieval England that has ever been made.

To be clear: the lower court said the map intentionally discriminates against black people in violation of the *constitution* (not just the VRA) and the MAGA Majority of SCOTUS is saying "that's ok now."
BREAKING: In an unsigned, per curiam opinion on the shadow docket, the SCOTUS conservatives allow Alabama to use a congressional map held repeatedly by a lower court to have been enacted with discriminatory intent.
