Right hates trans people - most public go "it's the right, they're nuts". So-called left join in - "Well now, what's going on, there must be an issue if they agree!" It's why the Guardian/Labour going anti-trans is, ultimately, more much more harmful than the Times/Telegraph/Tories doing it.

Democrats running ads like these signal to the general public and their voter base that this issue now has support by both parties, and that hating trans people is publicly acceptable. They do harm to us.

Underrated point here: when you alienate your base, you're not just losing votes. You're losing people who would campaign for you. Who would phone bank for you, knock on doors for you, tell their friends and family to vote for you. Is the hypothetical genital-obsessed centrist gonna do all that?

Cis people do not understand how much trans people's rights have regressed in just 5 years. 5 years ago, there were none of these restrictions. 19 states banned legal recognition 21 states have bathroom bans 8 states ban gender marker changes on DLs 25 ban gender affirming care for trans youth
Again, 5 years ago, none of these policies existed. 15 states require the forced outing of trans students 16 states ban medicaid coverage of gender affirming care 14 states have "Don't say trans" laws banning discussion of trans people's identities. 29 states have banned participation in sports.
5 years ago, there were over 100 multidisciplinary gender clinics for trans youth. Today, there are less than 31 (as of July 2026). bsky.app/profile/esqu...
Alejandra Caraballo@esqueer.net · 2mo agoIn 2021, there were roughly 101 gender clinics offering care to transgender youth offering a full range of gender affirming care. By July 2026, there are only about 31 left that still prescribe hormones and puberty blockers.
So when libs say, you need to do incremental progress like gay marriage, it completely ignores the rollbacks that have happened in 5 years. It is every aspect of trans life from where we use the bathroom, how we are addressed, what our IDs say, to even censorship on discussions about our existence.
So when a Dem says they agree with any of this, they are taking a position that is against what trans people ALREADY HAD just 5 years ago. That's why trans people won't accept it. It's not about progress, it's about preventing a managed decline in civil rights agreed to by Democrats.

i don't care what the issue is, if your election opponent is running millions of dollars in ads about one single issue, you cannot, under any circumstances, say that your opponent is right about the issue.
The point is that it's not going to stop with sports. They are using this seemingly ✌🏾reasonable✌🏾 argument about sports to scaffold other forms of discrimination against trans people writ large and cis women too! Conservatives want to push all women out of sports ultimately. What's more:

If I was forced to choose, as the two sorry system makes Americans, I know what my choice would be. I'd vote against the person advocating for internment camps.

Whats worse... A single Democratic loss in a statewide race to a right-wing governor? Or a Democratic Party win in Ohio that uses transphobia to get there, teaching dems across the country that this is a new acceptable tactic? The latter results in no party left to fight for us.

Good thread about why Democrats' silence on trans issues in the face of Republican attacks did not help them. Dems would have been viewed more favorably if they had actually pushed back. And in their silence, they allowed Rs to sway opinions and push anti-trans lies deeper into the public psyche.

While they did not move to the right as Edsall proposes now, they did cede the issue entirely. The results were predictable.
Already seeing advice from punditocracy that Dems ought to tack to the right to (ironically) raise the saliency and affirm the positions of Republicans on so-called "cultural issues." Let's ask Keir Starmer how well this worked - I hear he has loads of free time.

Amnesty International put out a major report documenting the influence of UK based anti trans gender critical organizations and their funding. Within hours, GC groups threatened defamation lawsuits and Amnesty was forced to pull it down. Proving the point they're anti rights. Anyways, here it is.
