The Guardian's homepage right now... 1. "UK approves Jackdaw gasfield in North Sea" 2. World must cut emissions by 18% in four years ‘to find our way back’, UN says

The Govt claiming we must drill more fossil fuels so we can use the tax revenues to fund the green transition is about as logical as a doctor telling you to smoke 2 packs a day to raise the money for your lung transplant You don’t put out a fire by pouring on more fuel 🔥#Jackdaw
“So it was, on that misty morning, that Brenda set off for the capital. She knew not what she would find there, only that the time had come to move on - away from small-minded rural attitudes and people who called her ‘Oreo’ and ‘the wide panda’ - to seek a more fulfilling life.”
that's strange because i define it as "paying a fair amount of taxes so my neighbours don't go bankrupt paying for their cancer treatment". but what would i know, i only live in a country with socialised healthcare
Q: How do you define socialism personally? JD VANCE: I think in reality what it actually means in the American context is you want to replace American workers with foreigners workers, and you want boys to play in girls' sports
I'm just a lowly art historian, but in moments like these I always think back to one early sign of Trump's wanton, pointless destructiveness: his demolition of the priceless & irreplaceable Art Deco relief sculptures on facade of the Bonwit Teller building, which he tore down to build Trump Tower
That’s a hard agree from me. I am genuinely astonished at the number of otherwise sensible commentators who still discuss his latest wild actions as if they’re within the parameters of the normal policy making process.
Amid the justified furore around the future of the Kennedy Center why is no one talking about the weirdness of this picture? Why is the President being shown this giant image? Can he not image what a newspaper headline might look like? Can he only make decisions with the aid of large pictures?
Pollution levels in London after 10 years of advancing sustainable transport.
One thing that gets my goat after moving out of London is inaccurate times on shows. Tonight’s performance at Soho Place advertised as 2h30. Actually 2h47. It’s the difference between enjoying the end of the show and fretting about whether you’ll miss the last train instead.
"I want your children's lungs to be smaller and less functional" is a bold electoral strategy.
You ever wanted to know what climate change actually looks like?
This is may be the craziest landslide/flash flood I have ever seen. Happened at the Gyiron border crossing at the border of Nepal and China.
29th August 1985 - An excited Michael Fish gets to deploy the rarely seen red number as the temperature gets up to an incredible 26 degrees in London!
Standing on an absolutely rammed SNCF train, people sitting on the floor, a broken loo door sliding wide open every so often. But of course this is the sort of thing that only happens on British trains…
Eurostar have changed my train time this Sunday, putting it back by 30 mins which means I’ll miss my last train home in the UK. Asked if I could transfer to earlier train and was told I’d be charged £50! Utterly appalling customer service.
Just watched the BBC 10 O'clock news @bbcnewsunofficial.bsky.social Two stories - one on the Suffolk wildfire and another on the countrywide Welsh drought - with not a SINGLE mention of the climate Just beyond belief www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Drought declared for whole of Wales amid sustained high temperatures
Wales is on course for its driest July on record in almost 190 years.

Story piling in on 'net zero', juxtaposed with news that 110,000 to be evacuated because of wildfires in France. Shameful press. Idiot press.
"Overall carbon emissions have increased" in the UK, because of Net Zero, Kemi Badenoch repeatedly tells the BBC, to no pushback. Just completely untrue
Badenoch just said, on national TV, that UK's carbon emissions have gone up "in total" because of the 2008 Climate Change Act. They have, in fact, declined by more than half. Did #Kuenssberg break in to point this basic fact out? Of course not
This is so, so bad. She’s taken the very narrow point that domestic drilling may result in oil and gas with a slightly lower carbon footprint than some imports and extrapolated it out to make sweeping claims about UK emissions increasing that are entirely false. So deeply unserious.

This isn’t just nitpicking. If you understand the psychology of motivating change, this is contributing to our fundamental failure to take action to save our own future. It needs to be taken seriously. #ClimateAction
If other news was reported like climate change:
This signage, found in a Vermont transit center, needs to be rolled out to the entire UK railway network immediately.
I realize that “hustle culture” is all the rage, but what about “sit in front of a crackling fire in a Scottish Highlands cottage during a pouring rain whilst reading, sipping tea, and eating scones” culture?
