Spent this weekend in WV (finally!) dusting off a long overdue collab with my favorite historian re: archival records of disease outbreaks around Bukhara right before the 1889 “Russian flu” pandemic 🦠
Check out the latest #virology research from @xdh.bsky.social! Human respiroviruses prefer α2-3 sialic acid, yet infect the α2-6-rich upper airway. We show they solve this via heteromultivalent binding: using α2-6Sia as auxiliary anchors when α2-3Sia is scarce. 🦠🍬 www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Also - we eradicated rinderpest in 2010 (joining smallpox as only diseases eradicated). Turns out fewer anti-vaxxers among cattle 🤦🏻♂️
Measles likely came from cows (via rinderpest) around the 6th century BCE. For 2,500 years, we didn’t evolve superhuman resistance—children just died. Real protection only came in the 1960s, with vaccines. Our superpower isn’t evolving into superhumans. It’s outthinking pathogens.

Since the emergence of clade 2.3.4.4 H5 viruses, they have shown a remarkable ability to team up with other NA subtypes (and with N1 without a stalk deletion). This in contrast to the “old” H5. Presumably linked to changes in receptor binding. After N2, N6, and N8, we now find N9.
