New PUBLIC COMMENT responding to another bad take about why Los Angeles has such a persistently high rate of homelessness publiccomment.blog/p/right-abou...
Right About Housing, Wrong About Homelessness

Missouri elections be like: Hitler (R) 79% - Christ (D) 21% And then the ballot initiative: Amend the Missouri constitution to require the state to own the means of production and work towards full communism? Yes 92% - No 8%
Maybe it's because I'm spoiled living in SF and not one of the cities that lost their hub but if you look at a timetable from the 90s, the daily frequencies are so much better now
So this is basically one of the entry points to becoming a reactionary
"Germany is not poorer than the US. It has just chosen to cash out more of its productivity in the form of free time than the US has. The other Western European countries have made similar decisions." peoplespolicyproject.org/2026/08/04/w...
Western Europe Is Richer Than the US
Let's put an end to the stupid GDP discourse.

Jay Caspian Kang still refuses to believe there's anything worse than annoying social liberals
Nope, nice try. Not doing this to myself. You'll have to kill my ass
While I don’t agree with it, I can totally understand aesthetic NIMBYism about Victorian San Francisco. I do not understand aesthetic NIMBYism on behalf of Palo Alto, which is a bland postwar sprawl suburb full of strip malls and tract homes that now sell for three and a half million dollars.
i started this train of thought as a joke but now i do think there's something to the idea that the way to sell the green revolution to the US public is that we're being denied Good Deals on cheap chinese cars and solar panels and there's nothing more unamerican than saying we can't have a good deal
City leaders of a place where shitty mid-century ranch houses sell for $4M....didn't expect anyone to build multi-story buildings once they were legalized? I sympathize, who could have foreseen this
New California law could ignite a surprising housing boom in Palo Alto
City officials didn't expect this flurry.

the next president has a duty to the country to prove that “tax immunity” is a completely made up thing that doesnt exist. they need to do this through intense prosecution to signal to future leaders what will happen if they try this
FLAG: Trump gets to keep tax immunity for himself, his sons, and the Trump Organization under the new 'deal' struck by Todd Blanche. The new order also reaffirms that Trump won't have to pay any taxes he might have owed the IRS.
It's absolutely insane we've somehow let the Covid recriminations debate become like "why didn't we reopen in person schools before there was a vaccine" and not "why did none of the trump guys go to jail for stealing PPE from New York hospitals in March 2020"
come on down and claim your "i did donald trump favors and i got stabbed in the back for the trouble" t-shirt, gulf state oligarchs, we set up a whole supply chain and warehouse network for these things, they're always in high demand, drop shipping couldn't keep up with it
Behind the scenes, Gulf countries are frustrated with what they see as a lack of a clear strategy from the U.S. as the war drags on, subjecting their territories to frequent Iranian attacks, people familiar with the matter said.
"what Trump and his supporters hate most of all is reality. They know what they want to believe. They fly into paroxysms of rage whenever someone points out that the world isn’t what they want it to be." paulkrugman.substack.com/p/reality-is...

All the Fauci stuff is a modern day version of the POW/MIA stuff after Vietnam - a way to try to rewrite the history of a huge failure of conservative ideology to be instead a story about how liberals and foreigners stabbed us in the back.
This is dumb but also helps make the point that Americans are a very rich people, and actual poverty is too uncommon to make social democratic politics happen
I didn't think definitions of "working class" could get worse. I was wrong.
Jones Act discourse makes me appreciate that we don't really hear too much about Ninth Freedom cabotage in the airline industry anymore
The Dodgers are a very good team that signed the game's greatest player in a century. They did not dominate before Ohtani and won't after. They are not guaranteed a championship this season, they did not walk to championships the past 2 seasons and we do not need to destroy baseball to stop them
If the same team wins a third straight championship by completely bypassing any semblance of an honest payroll, does it matter how the standings looked in July?
This is one of the acute reasons we must build more housing in San Francisco, and California more broadly. I’d love to live in a country where trans people don’t have to flee their home states for ones with better protections, but we don’t and in the meantime we need to live up to our values here

I think MetLife is egregiously bad, but isn't the problem here that NFL football is a deeply anti-urban sport with a culture built around tailgating, that basically required mass suburbanization in order to become popular?
Last week, a tweet about a stadium shot went viral and it sparked a really interesting conversation. I looked into it. Why Was That Picture of MetLife So Bleak? wideleft.football/p/why-was-th...
I strongly urge the vote-by-mail states to make it clear to both the administration and the Supreme Court that we will not comply. It's time to confront our constitutional crisis head on.

The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to allow for now an executive order targeting mail-in voting.

a longer-duration chart shows an additional point: the ~zero food price inflation period from 2015-2020 was a historical outlier too one thing I wonder about a lot is how the goldilocks economy of the late Obama recovery into Trump 1 shaped expectations that were shattered by the inflation shock
"Buying food to eat at home has gotten 33% more expensive in U.S. cities since the beginning of 2019, according to government figures. In the 7.5 years before that, prices rose 6.4%." (via @apnews.com) apnews.com/article/groc...
1. We need to densify at least this much, I won't PEotG 2. Two stairways in a 2,500sf footprint is wild / tragic result of current codes 3. Better than townhouses, single-level units w/ elevator access 4. Requiring 2 of the 8 units be deed-restricted affordable means we'll get way too few of these
One of the first projects to show the impacts of SF's recent upzoning. 8 stories, 8 units, in a mostly 2-3 story area. sfyimby.com/2026/07/rend...
