One harmful effect of the anthropomorphism permating nearly every discussion of "AI" (aka LLMs) is that sentience and cognition are inferred on the basis of a very expensive, sometimes useful parlor trick. Weirdly, this comes from people for whom "correlation is not causation" is a standard retort.
