I don't know about y'all but I wept reading this. I've been feeling helpless from afar and obsessively reading/watching all the local journalism but the immediacy of Alex's account, present at the actual moment people had to decide what to grab and when to get it out, is really something.

If you’re outside, the best breathing protection is to wear an N95 or N100 mask. These masks filter out most fine particles in smoke, but not hazardous gases like carbon monoxide. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity. #wawildfire #wawx

Big problem with the evacuations of the Indian Trail & Five Mile neighborhoods in NW Spokane is that they were built with few roads going in and out. Also will make trying to get equipment in to fight the fires, and moving them around where needed, very difficult.

Update on PJ.2.1, the saltation variant originating in Ontario & found in wastewater in ~10 US states. 11/75 sequences today from New York are PJ.2.1. Eight of 11 sequences are identical, with the three others differing by 1 nuc mut. Such limited diversity typically indicates rapid spread. 1/5

Speaking of gain of function, the Nebraska lineage appeared 3 more times in the last month. The SARS-CoV-2 Spike RBD looks more like a bat Sarbecovirus (RaTG13) than the Nebraska lineage. Think our immune systems would recognize it?
