My conclusion now that I'm halfway through the book is that it is hard to even comprehend just how bad you had it if you weren't a rich woman prior to like, 1950s in Poland, and the poorer you got the worse it got for you.

How I wish that Polish history books got an English translation. Below is me, paraphrasing a story I'd found in *Chłopki* by Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak.

There's a rural teacher in Greater Poland, writing in 1928, who reports that, when asked about what they would like to do in the future, one girl in his class wrote "I would like to be a cow so I could graze in the fields and give everyone milk", and he, full well familiar with conditions she and other girls in the village face, comments by saying "This, indeed, would be better for her. At least she would be treated as a piece of property, and if damage is incurred to a piece of property, that's a cause for concern and worry."

If the academy gets pulled into coming out swinging against the biggest adaptation of Homer in probably a couple generations off the back of one prominent scholar deciding to be Reviewer 2 to Nolan's work, it will say, IMO, pretty damning things about academia's ability to foster public engagement.

People are being extremely uncharitable about this line in particular and this sentiment in general. The movie presents a set of moral values as quite literally make or break for civilisation and then our hero defies these values in a climax that is presented as unambiguously estimable.

Normally wouldn't do this but - hey this is absolutely disgusting to say, and you shouldn't be following this guy. It is not Ukraine's fault that Russia bombs residential blocks, hospitals, schools, power stations.

What’s funny is that I don’t even support Russia. I just understand why they invaded Ukraine even though I think it was a bad move because it invited even more aggression against them. But The US turned Ukraine into a fascist hell hole and is getting Ukrainians and Russians killed.
