as noted yesterday, Trump has now come around to treating an Iranian toll system covering the Strait of Hormuz as a given. Hard to overstate the level of strategic failure. US started the war purely as a war of choice and ends up dramatically empowering Iran and given the Iranian govt big wins.

Reuters: Iran wants fees of 5%-7% of the price of cargo from ships using the strait; Oman wants 3%. "Making fees voluntary, at least nominally, could be a way out of the impasse, although an implied threat of Iranian attacks could mean shippers would be ​unlikely to risk transit without paying."

So the proposed Iran-Oman deal on the strait is a pretty unambiguous defeat for the USA if it goes through, since it would represent a formalization of Iran's de facto control of the strait and presumably create the conditions for Iran to extract goodness-only-knows how much money from the GCC.

El Sayed is winning big in Michigan. Meanwhile, Wesley Bell is winning big in his rematch with Cori Bush in St. Louis. Unlike in 2024, Bell is leads both in the suburbs and the city. So maybe not everything is about Israel, Palestinians or AIPAC, which opposed El Sayed, and backed Bell.

Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

The interesting thing about school closures during covid (agree with them or not) is they had much less impact on long-term academic outcomes than people expected (me included). But much more long-term impact on mental health and attendance.

Packing the court is not the right fix. Congress should aggressively legislate term limits AND tightly regulate the judicial review process, that less we forget, was totally made up by the court and it is not in the constitution explicitly at all.

Taking the CT Transit bus in New Haven after a few weeks using Barcelona metro area buses is like a trip back to 1991, and not in a good way. Good Lord are US bus fleets fucking awful. And this is a fairly new bus, and feels like something out of the last century.
