Notice DOJ doesn't talk about its efforts to obtain state voter files anymore. They are 0-20 in those cases and today is the beginning of the quiet period -- states can no longer do systematic removals of names from the voter rolls. TLDR: We won!🥳

#WIPSnips The word for August 3 is THRILL This "thrilling" snip from NOMARA is part of a flashback of Kharys's story. He was captured as a child by Oandah, but Arasend took him--and nurtured him to be her lover. He's a teen now and Oandah makes a deadly move... #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #SFF

Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. In this snip, which is a flashback to Kharys's story, Oandah makes the move that gets her exiled by Arasend: she tries to take the Queen's prize captive.

In the deepening amber cast by that setting sun, he saw Oandah.
She had grown in dominance, Arasend’s daughter who had not slain him that day five years ago but had brought him to this place and to this fate. Her commands had gained in stature and now she led a twelfth of Eshuun’s warriors. Her triumphs filled the Hall; she had her choice of captives now. Her golden skin caught the dying light and molded it so that it clothed her like fire. As she stood before Kharys, the distance between them measured in a few feet of path, only Oandah’s eyes, themselves the lambent gold of flame, touched him. They touched him boldly, without fear. The wrongness of it struck Kharys dumb with a new, uncertain, terror. She should not be in the garden, and he knew this. Only Arasend ever came to him here or saw him without his veils. Suddenly, the strange, nonhuman conventions his asexual guardians had forced on him were to be honored, obeyed, and he turned from Oandah, thinking to flee. But her hand reached out, and seized his wrist, placing a possessive heat upon his flesh.
	“Kharys, no,” she said.
He tried to pull away, but there was something in her touch, a thrilling, velvet urgency, that commanded him. His whole body trembled in her grasp, though it was only his arm she held captive.

Sam helps Hazel count the hidden treasure she found in her grandparent's attic. From Herbs and Iron, a cozy romantasy about a witch returning home to reopen her gran's herb shop and reconnect with the blacksmith she left behind. #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingPrompts #WritingCommunity #Herbs&Iron

Sam ran his thumb over the embossing, feeling the arch of Witch Queen Agatha’s prominent nose and the ripples of her elaborately curled hair. The coin felt heavy between Sam’s thick fingers. Substantial. He turned it over, angling the markings so that sunlight glinted off the pair of bubbling cauldrons stamped on the back.

“How many do you count?” Hazel’s voice echoed from the stairwell.

“Same as you. Forty-seven double cauldrons,” Sam answered, tucking the coin back into the box. “To think your grandparents had all this hidden in their chimney.” It was more than a year’s profits for a skilled tradesman like Sam and a fortune for someone like the Cahills, scrimping by on odd jobs and meager salaries. Enough to keep Hazel’s grandparents comfortable in their retirement, if they had lived to see it.

Wood squeaked as Hazel descended the last step and turned towards the kitchen. Her hands were caught in her hair, copper hair pins flashing in the morning light as she fixed her braid into a crown.

“Well, that’s the thatching and the carpentry sorted with coin to spare for stocking the shop.” Hazel slid the last pin in place and gave the intricate chestnut plait a final pat. “How do I look?”

Like an angel waiting to pluck my soul out of the River.

A brown bodice embroidered with dancing foxes hoisted Hazel’s moderate assets into place over a blue blouse that matched the summer-sky color of her eyes. Sturdy split skirts spilled over her broad hips, curving as if they’d been sculpted by the Goddess herself for Sam’s hands to hold. How dare those Wardens from Miss Edie’s pub call Hazel horse-faced? Her nose was on the bold side, true, but to Sam’s eye it just made her beauty distinct.

“Sam,” Hazel prompted him, hands perched on those distracting hips. He had been quiet too long, even for her.

“You look…” Sam searched for a word appropriate to the situation. “Respectable. I wouldn’t hesitate to approve your application.”

In a follow-up statement, Reagan McCarthy, a spokesperson for Moreno wrote, “While we won’t dignify this baseless attacks by Democrats and their media allies, Senator Moreno will not speak on active litigation involving his family.” Reagan McCarthy is a perfect made-up name for a fascist Republican

“Look, guys, this is about my personal family situation,” Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) reportedly said. “It’s pretty grotesque.”

Framed photos of birds of the Northwest adorn every wall and actual nests with stuffed birds are mounted between the pictures. A folding table covered by piles of boxes of what I’m assuming are avian diorama supplies is being used as a workbench. “Yeah, it’s a mess, but it’s our mess.” #WIPSnips

#WIPSnips from Monah Bk. 1 -- Pretty sure I've shared this snip before (from Evlin's POV, Monah is waking up after being unconscious), but it's the only use of "thrill" (in any form) in the entire novel. #writesky #writingcommunity #queerwriters #writingprompts

“Evie,” Monah whispered.
Hearing her name first from her princess’s lips sent a thrill through the center of her heart. “Princess.” She took her hand, and electricity zipped across the surface of her skin. Warming her from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet. Evlin smiled when Monah’s hand cupped the curve of her cheek.

#WIPSnips | thrill Back into one of the short stories covering Sabbat's backstory for this one - and, specifically, his first assassination contract, back when he was a barefoot teenage runaway living on the streets of a pirate port ( saranadosfiction.com/2024/01/29/a... )

Moving as quick as he dared, he padded silently across the room, reaching into his shirt and sliding his razor free of the bandages as he did so. The blade flicked open whisper-quiet, a flash of light in the gloom, and he held it low and tight against his side, trying to stop his hand from shaking, keeping his breathing as steady as he could, hoping against hope that the man in the bed couldn’t hear his heart racing in his chest and the blood roaring in his ears.

Because there *was* a man in the bed. Not a pile of blankets, or a convenient pillow, or anything else that might’ve been mistaken for a man, but a man, lying on his back with his mouth partway open and a sheet twisted around his legs, as though he’d been thrashing around trying to get comfortable before he sank fully into sleep. He was young, as captains went, and handsome enough with it, with two gold earrings glittering in one ear and a mane of henna-dyed hair mussed around his head on the pillow, and he couldn’t be anyone other than Red Tom, the man that Sabbat had come to kill.

For a moment, he almost wanted to shake the bastard awake. Let him die having made a fight of it, not lying asleep in bed looking as defenceless as…

As defenceless as half the folks he and his had kicked and beaten and cut and burned for nothing other than their own fucking amusement and the thrill of the chase.

No. Waking him up would be suicide, and Sabbat wasn’t about to off himself. Not tonight, at any rate.

He leant over the bed, put his off hand over the sleeping man’s nose and mouth, and, with the care and precision of a priest at a sacrifice, drew the moonlight-silvered blade of the razor hard and deep through the meat and muscle of the side of Red Tom’s throat.

#fantasy #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #WIPSnips #thrill Rushak is protective of his cousin. I don’t know how to fight scenes, so it’s fair I write them for characters that have no idea how to fight. Right? 😅 - Brother’s Keeper, my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power

carry, but there was a limb of leafy branches torn from a felled tree. He grabbed that and whirled about to see Mistle beset by another Cedhrun, larger and stronger. Not be useless, not be useless—He dashed
toward her screaming, the limb with its branches extended in front of him. The mass took the Cedhrun in the face and its axe scythed down between him and Mistle, missing them both. As it staggered backward, Mistle swept its legs out from under it with her spear shaft. Rushak grabbed the axe and hurled it back
through the trees. Their eyes met. Mistle's face was scratched, her arm bleeding, but she was flushed with exhilaration. She was also endangered by fatigue.

No such THRILL inflamed Rushak's blood; his
pulse thundered, wild with fear. He glanced at their toppled foe, which was still struggling with the branches in its face. Then he glared at her. "Come on!" he said through his teeth, tilting his head toward the looming Forest trees. "You are very talented, but we can help better from up there."
