Today's AI in law horror story: An appellate attorney used ChatGPT to summarize the appellate record. It got a lot of stuff wrong. He included the made-up facts in his brief. The NM Supreme Court dressed him down for half an hour and referred him to the disciplinary board.

Yeah, yeah, there's no ethical consumption under capitalism. And yes, I still use some services provided by corporations run by monsters. But I'm doing my gat damnedest not to buy any NEW shit from obvious monsters.

I don't subscribe to any Substacks because that company has platformed and promoted Nazis. I switched away from Shopify because they platform horrible people. I deleted X because that fucker is one of the worst people on the planet. Why the hell would I ever use an OpenAI product?

Also: the "A.i." billionaires are exploiters and liars and extractionists. Most of them support right wing fascists. They literally cannot be trusted about anything. So I'm not interested in participating in anything that furthers their interests or gives them more money.

I've always said there are legit uses for machine learning in science. That's great! Go for it! But I will likely never be interested in the consumer-facing generative and LLM bullshit that's linked with fraud, cheating, theft, right-wing ideology, deskilling, and even murder & suicide.

All of the LLMs stole from me. Most of the big "A.i." billionaires are horrifying right wingers. Consumer-facing generative "A.i." "writing" and "art" tools deskill people, cheat kids out of real education, spread falsehoods and disinfo, and violate privacy. So no, I ain't using that shit.

Sometimes when the world is full of shitty things I can't control, the solution is to stalk the school supply sales and collect donated books until I can fix one problem at least. 😊 40% of the kids at my neighborhood school are in transitional housing/unhoused, but they'll have supplies!

I asked my neighborhood teacher contact what school supplies kids are missing & I've got a list. If I go to Staples every day and get the max allowed of the sale stuff, I think I can get 100 notebooks, 100 comp books, 200 folders, 50 8-pencil packs, 100 loose leaf paper packs for about $250.

So we know AI helped a negligible number of students. But how many did it harm? I've crunched the raw data provided by the lead researcher, and what I've found is that ~9,500 students using AI studied less than even the *least* studious, non-AI using student. This should shock the conscience.

Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.

idk man i just don't think the question is "is ai (claude, chatgpt, etc) useful?" more than it's "can we use ai ethically / safely" and the answer to the latter is no

Personally, publicly interrogating an author on how they could have the temerity to make creative decisions you do not approve of is...a thing you can do. We have free will, after all. It might be worth considering, though, that you will be showing your entire ass to whoever sees you do it.

The biggest target I've ever seen on my books. Texas placed Banned Book Club and Occulted on a state-wide list of illegal "dirty books." Having them in any school could lead to state takeover where the government could shut down the library entirely and convert it into a student detention center.

They genuinely don't understand that 'you can use AI to do X faster' does not compute to many creative people.

I think the stem people also just really don't understand the antipathy AI generates amongst creatives is derived from how many people are just trying to scam customers by (basically) promising hand made art and charging as such when what they're really selling is photoshopping on top an AI.

I think the divide is really evident when stem AI heads are like, 'please let me show you how useful it is' and it really just various efficiencies you can extract from certain apps or processes that are just not that relevant to people. Stack on top that you need to pay for it and ppl don't see it.

i think the divide between the stem people and artists of all stripes re:genai is basically irresolvable (because for stem people all of their arguments are basically, 'shut up, get out of the way' in various levels of niceness). Regardless of various externalities of AI which might be resolved

The reason I don't just roll my eyes at the people Faine is talking about and move on is they somehow managed to worm their way into actual decision making authority over their vibes based approach to health.

Anyway, your problem isn‘t finding the time to take notes. The problem is that taking notes is thinking and thinking has to be done by someone. women have been doing a lot of metacognition that looks like a task when it’s really thinking.

AI is a scourge. But it is important not to trust "AI detectors". I lost regular freelancing work because my client insisted I used AI to write copy (I didn't, but their AI detecting software said I did). This is a great thread with an excellent example of why these detectors cannot be trusted.

I just want to mention: Even if your AI somehow runs locally and you think it's okay, it's still using trained data from a pre-existing dataset which is still full of stolen work. The sheer amount of data gen AI needs is in the hundreds of thousands, you can only get that by scraping
