The AI problem is also, at the end of the day, about our democracy. The real problem is oligarchy. If we had a political system which represented what most people wanted, we could deal with AI in a way that ensured public benefits and safety. The problem is a few oligarchs decide our fate.
It’s kind of horrible to be politically aware right now bc you log onto websites that contain The News and the actual fact of things is like “the president was up late tweeting ‘GLONZO IS ALL, GLORY TO GLONZO’ and has proposed renaming France to East America, a bold and questionably legal maneuver”
The last people I want to hear about "human nature" from are misanthropic Silicon Valley techbois. These people hate humans. They hate the users of their products. They keep trying to find ways to replace humans in the things we do. They can't bother with human rights, but demand machine rights.

I swear every pitch for why kids *NEED* to be trained on AI "to use it critically" is instantly made foolish by the idea of just teaching kids more comprehensive general media literacy and research skills. I use research rules I learned in high school on a daily basis, and I am almost 40.

This act is akin to burning a library to the ground. And these companies can & do erase archives whenever they like. We have got to develop systematic personal & organizational archiving practices that don’t trust record keeping to digital platforms that authors & users don’t own or control.

Almost every week, we see a liberal writer condemn “wokeism” or the “woke. . .” They are attacking a caricature, a perversion, a distortion of a historically Black concept that MAGA propagandists first distorted. These people are not serious thinkers.

Ive been thinking the same thing, and kind of hesitant to say it out loud because we're already a group considered to be luddites and technophobes, when its really our sense that students absolutely must train their own minds to read primary sources, and think/write with primary+secondary sources.

It really bothers when people dismiss victims of bigotry and discrimination standing up for their rights as being 'culture wars', much 'identity politics'. Civil rights, and the ability to live your life free of harassment and bigotry is a material, serious political subject.

Moderation isn’t the answer — progressive populism is. I don’t understand how some members of my party hate the DSA and Hasan Piker more than literal white supremacists in our government. Especially if Democrats actually want to win.
