queer, white, mid-century modern in age if not style all the cakes

One thing I wish people would realize is just how central JK Rowling is to the entire anti-trans ecosystem. Looking at a network node analysis of the top 200 anti-trans X accounts, she is the most central figure spanning both sides of the Atlantic from Republicans to Labour.

A network graph visualization on a dark background showing connections between various accounts. The central, highly connected node is labeled "J.K. Rowling," with lines radiating out to many other nodes color-coded by region (UK, US, etc.). A detail panel on the right displays stats for her account, including her role as "Author & commentator," an in-degree of 153, an out-degree of 84, and 14 million followers.A scatter plot graph on a dark background comparing accounts based on "followers (log)" on the x-axis and "in-degree" on the y-axis. The data points are color-coded by region. J.K. Rowling is highlighted as a major outlier in the top right corner, possessing the highest number of followers and the highest in-degree. Other labeled points lower on the graph include various politicians, individuals, and campaign organizations.

This reminded me of something - have looked it up: JBS Haldane, 'The Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose' in Possible Worlds, 1927, when 'queer' presumably did not have quite the connotations it would now. Even so....

Math is discovered, but what we know of math is limited by WHAT we can discover. It is entirely possible that the universe is far larger and stranger than our brains can encompass.

'Tis the season of New Year's resolutions! But, if you, like me, are guessing that 2026 will be full of uncertainty and disruption I'd offer a slight twist. Think about how, in the year to come, you can invest in your coping capacity.

Can't believe the billionaires looked at the internet and was like "you know what this place needs? more noise to drown out the signal" and then got everyone they knew to put all their dollars on the signal-drowning machine.

Em dashes are prevalent in professional writing and LLMs were largely trained on stolen professional writing, therefore LLMs use em dashes. In the name of God, stop talking like Skynet has its own house style.

If you voted for Allison Riggs in the 2024 NC election check here to see if your ballot is being challenged. If so, then you have 15 business days from whenever they mail the notices to cure your ballot, but best to check now & cure yours as soon as possible, even if this ruling might get overturned

Despite coming from NYT, this is one of the most comforting and galvanizing things I've seen in the last few weeks.

From @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social. "If you’re always consumed by the next outrage, you can’t look closely at the last one. The impression of Trump’s power remains; the fact that he keeps stepping on rakes is missed. The projection of strength obscures the reality of weakness. Don’t believe him."

Actually, this is important enough to bring out of replies to the top level: if you're in the US and active on social media, and ESPECIALLY politically active, this is a simple step you can take to mitigate the possibility of legal action against you destroying your life.

(And a lot of those "ways it could be improved" are things ordinary people can defend themselves against: I strongly recommend everyone have an umbrella rider on their home/renters insurance that covers defamation liability, for instance, which can make a WORLD of difference)
