Of that of which we cannot speak

Reading about the Blue Qur'an today, and...just...wow. Gold Kufic script (likely gold leaf, not shell!) on indigo-dyed parchment (technique uncertain! Brushed? Dipped? Pressed? No one knows!). Written in the early ʿAbbāsid period (ca. 800), place uncertain. 2024 research suggests Cairo or Baghdad.

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

this is not even the first job where I've had coworkers ask "how did you learn to type so fast?" okay guys well there's this thing called a "forum," and sometimes people in it are *wrong*, so

We finally got this one online! Greek Herbal on YouTube now. Something fun to watch over the weekend! youtu.be/-KGhKD15f1c

The ultra extreme crazy trans activist position that our political class can't countenance right now is that if a trans woman is in A&E she should be considered a patient in need of care instead of an inconvenience to be dealt with.

0 complaints about trans people in hospitals. Trans people banned. 0 cases of puberty blockers for trans kids causing harm. Puberty blockers for trans kids banned. 0 cases of trans people attacking cis people in toilets. Trans people banned.

Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.

This looks very useful: a new online searchable version of Cappelli's _Dizionario di abbreviature_ reader.contubernalesbooks.com#/paleo/cappe... There is also a section on how to actually read a manuscript, which looks like a very useful teaching/learning tool: reader.contubernalesbooks.com#/paleo

If you ask me, this is one of the most important manuscripts in the Cairo Genizah collections. It's a page from a 9th-century Quran with text from Sura 11 (Hud) about the prophet Noah (vv. 43-50). Despite this origin, it was found in a synagogue and likely owned by a Jew. @theul.bsky.social

Light, stained, horizontal parchment folio from a Quran codex, showing 8 lines of Arabic text in black ink. Red dots mark some of the vowels in the text. The margins are wide and several creases are visible running vertically across the page. A pencil label in the bottom right reads T-S Ar.38.8 (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-AR-00038-00008/1).
