Super interesting contribution to the cold start discourse. Need to go reflect on my own relationship with bigness, as an artist. “Don’t get hung up on bigness. Get hung up on finding places online you enjoy, and share them with people you enjoy, and be content—very content—in that.”

My contribution to the "Should writers switch to the Atmosphere even though Substack is bigger?" discourse.

This is what irks me about generated design. SO many choices are automated I could point at any element on the page and ask why is this here, why is this like this, with no answer.

One of the earliest and best lessons I learned from a #design mentor was this: no arbitrary design decisions. Every single element should have a reason for being there and a clear relationship to everything else. In other words, good design is *resolved*.

At our municipal grocery stores, New Yorkers will get a 30% discount on eggs, milk, chicken, produce and other everyday essentials. In the wealthiest city in the richest country in the world, no one should have to wonder how they’ll afford the food they need to feed themselves or their families.

Mayor Mamdani holds up bananas with a 30% off sticker on them. Shelves of produce and canned goods, all with 30% off stickers on them. New Yorkers clap at the press conference announcing the 30% discount for municipal grocery stores.

This! website=your own place on the net. So many FB-page only businesses right now 😬 Make a cheap and frictionless AT alternative to those pages and it’ll work. And from there it’s an AT starting point into events, blog posts, etc

This started up as a write-up for a cool hack I made (Atproto DID + Tailscale, coming soon 😎), but like many times before it started taking a life of its own, about how an integration of small scale networks is a more sustainable version of "internet scale" than large tech monopoly data centers.
