Just Another Apocryphal Mess

The media's takeaway from an El-Sayed win is the same as it would have been from a Stevens win, and the same as it will be if El-Sayed wins the general, or if he loses it: everyone, no matter who they are, needs to take several steps to the right.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

An aircraft passenger oxygen mask: a drop down passenger mask with air bag and yellow plastic mouth and nose cover, oxygen tube has been cut; Demonstration model used by flight attendant crew for passenger instruction. Has text on the side indicating that it's non-functional.

LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft, who are so all-in on "AI" that they're destroying their entire XBox brand as a side effect. Your reports will be used to train Copilot and other tools to *sound less like what we think AI is like*, not get rid of AI slop on the site.

LinkedIn added an "AI slop" button. The U-Turn is happening, expect to see a lot more of this from other tech companies.

Mainstream Respectable opinion is that people joking about a bad person's death represents a culture of cruelty, but really it represents a culture of impunity. It's a coping mechanism for watching someone do evil their whole life and never seeing consequences

this link also includes instructions for using userscripts in a browser extension like Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey/Violentmonkey/etc, as well as other methods turns out it's implemented client-side, which is easy enough to bypass even without a VPN

Bsky now requires age verification to use in any capacity. As always, Firefox users can bypass these things with a custom uBlock Origin filter on mobile and desktop, which is easier than completing the age verification itself: gist.github.com/mary-ext/6e2...

the problem with the games industry is that it makes money in a sustainable way by creating stuff that people want to pay for this is in contrast to how big capital would prefer to make money, by trying to scale fake numbers to infinity using gambler brained investors lured in by impossible claims

Thomas Paine is my favorite founding father. He was famously abolitionist and one of the earliest voices to point out the hypocrisy of fighting for independence while keeping slaves. He also firmly believed that keeping any friendship which required compromising your morals made you a bad person.

The founder we should talk more about is Thomas Paine, who will fuck your shit up every time. Here he is in The Rights of Man just ripping into any ideas of "originalism" and that kind of garbage.

Every age and generation must be as free to act for itself, in all cases, as the ages and generations which preceded it. The vanity and presumption of governing beyond the grave, is the most ridiculous and insolent of all tyrannies. Man has no property in man; neither has any generation a property in the generations which are to follow. The parliament or the people of 1688, or of any other period, had no more right to dispose of the people of the present day, or to bind or to controul them in any shape whatever, than the parliament or the people of the present day have to dispose of, bind or controul those who are to live a hundred or a thousand years hence. Every generation is, and must be, competent to all the purposes which its occasions require. It is the living, and not the dead, that are to be accommodated.

I love when MAGA types publish a list of unambiguously good things as if they're unambiguously bad things. It's such a revelation of what fearful cowardly people they are. We live in times of radical abuses. We should all seek radical remedies. All I can say to this is Hell Yeah.

A scare add about the DSA that reads "DSA's new platform: WORKERS DESERVE MORE. Radical goals. Straight from their platform."

The goals include:

Abolish the senate, expand the house of representatives and implement proportional representation and ranked choice voting

Replace the President and Supreme Court
Defund the Department of War
Abolish the Carceral State
Free Palestine
End Sactions on Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran
Abolish ICE and grant amnesty for all
Public ownership of major corporations
Abolish the Electoral College
Replace the two-party system with a multi-party democracy.

Their ultimate goal: A Democratic Socialist Republic. To win the battle for democracy, draft a new constitution, and create a democratic socialist republic.

It ends with the warning: This is the DSA's official platform. They wrote it. They approved it. Now you know.

To which I personally can only say Hell Yeah.

celebrating the good parts of america today. if you don’t think there are any good parts, just look to all the stuff the fascists are desperate to stifle

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

I'll say this until I'm dead. The whole conservative project has been about the conversion of public spaces to private ones, ones where groups can be excluded all in the name of individual choice. And if you hear the phrase "tragedy of the commons," you know who you're talking to.

TLDR Swinton@thedoodlebear.bsky.social · last mo.

It's interesting how everything people used to proudly call "public" when I was growing up (public parks, public libraries, public schools, public transportation, public television, etc) is suddenly "socialist" now that rich people are spinning it.
