even if LLM actually made gamedev more efficient, which I see no reason to believe it has or will, that won't reduce crunch, because the business people will just push harder until you're crunching again. When a tool increases worker productivity, that doesn't translate into better work hours.

Like, beyond the obvious “you’re learning how to learn” stuff (which is true! There’s just more!), taking a challenging course shores up your distress tolerance and your discipline! Because frequently in life you have to work very hard on stuff you don’t want to do! An adult person skill!

Even in the '70s, the Takahata–Miyazaki style of pacing was unorthodox. The way they slowed down to focus on tangible details made the anime industry nervous. It went against the accepted wisdom. But it really can work, as we explore: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/slow-stori...

Trying out a lighting scheme and some early color exploration. All in all I think this coming along just fine. I honestly can't understand anyone who would want to outsource this experience to AI. It's like building a robot to eat your pie while you sit on the cuck chair.

1/ This company’s models were trained on web scraped datasets (like LAION) and their founders are ex-Stability AI employees who engage in the same thieving practices that led artists like myself to sue Stability. GenAi companies NEED big names to sanitize their exploitation and crippling PR.

Quick iteration is often brought up as GenAI justification, but IMO most game studios are already good at quick iteration. In my experience, the more common trap studios fall into is bad time management because they continually add more stuff beyond the time when they should be polishing/finishing.

I really dunno why the entertainment industry is so comfortable treating visual artists like shit on a boot, literally no one would care about your slop without them

If you’re worried about brand cohesion and colours and logos before you have some understanding of who you are and what you like you make, you’re designing wrappers for a burger that doesn’t exist yet. And if your goal is “I want to make burgers like McDonalds” McDonalds will always do that better
